Parish Church of Saint-Saturnin

Espaon is a French commune with 190 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Val de Save (until 2015: canton Lombez ).

The inhabitants are called Espaonais and Espaonaises .

Espaon is located about 33 kilometers south-east of Auch in the Région naturelle Comminges on the south-eastern border with the neighboring Haute-Garonne department .

Waters

Espaon is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Save is a tributary of the Garonne and forms the natural border with the neighboring municipalities of Cadeillan and Sauveterre to the west. Tributaries of the Save cross the territory of the municipality, the Gesse and the Ruisseau Ruisseau d'en Courneil.

history

The village was originally on a road in Gallo-Roman times , the remains of which can still be seen today.

Population development

After the records began, the number of inhabitants rose to a high of around 490 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of around 145 inhabitants, with intermittent recovery phases until the turn of the millennium, before a phase of growth began. which raised them to a level of around 190 residents.

Attractions

  • Saint-Saturnin parish church from the 16th century. It contains a lecture cross made of silver and wood from the 16th century. it originally comes from the cathedral in Lombez and has been classified as a monument historique of objects since July 22, 1971 .

Jacques Guignard after the first flight of the Concorde

Personalities

Jacques Guignard, born on June 18, 1920 in Orléans , died on October 13, 1981 in Espaon, was a French fighter and test pilot. During the Second World War he fled to England to initially fight for the French government in exile as a fighter pilot. He later became a test pilot and took part in the first flight of the Concorde on March 2, 1969 as a co-pilot .
