Samatan ( French and Gascon ) is a commune with 2370 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French region of Occitania in the Gers department . Samatan is the capital of the Val de Save canton and was the capital of the Samatan canton of the same name until 2015 .

The inhabitants of the community call themselves the Samatanais .

Samatan is located 36 km southeast of the municipality Auch in the historical, Gascon province of Savès and is traversed by the Save .

Sports and events

On July 16, 2012, Samatan was the starting point of the 15th stage of the Tour de France .

Personalities

The French writer François de Belleforest (1530–1583) lived in Samatan .
