Evelyn Beatrice Hall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evelyn Beatrice Hall (born September 28, 1868 in Shooter's Hill , Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich , † April 13, 1956 in Wadhurst , East Sussex ) was an English writer who wrote under the pseudonym S. G. Tallentyre . She is best known for her biography The Life of Voltaire , published in 1903 .

In her further work The Friends of Voltaire , published in London in 1906 , which presents ten important comrades-in-arms ( friends ) of Voltaire in the fight of the Enlightenment against the infame in ten biographies , the author EB Hall Voltaire uses the much-quoted bon mot “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend your right to the death to say it "(" I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it ") in the mouth, as an illustration of Voltaire's attitudes . This phrase is incorrectly attributed to Voltaire himself on numerous Internet platforms describing the principle of freedom of expression , although it cannot be found anywhere in his works.

Evelyn Beatrice Hall death certificate

Hall arguably had a significant impact on the life of Hugh Stowell Scott (pseudonym: Henry Seton Merriman ). On his death in 1903 he left Hall £ 5,000 with the note "in gratitude for continued support and literary advice without which I would never have been able to make a living from writing." Adjusted for inflation, the total corresponds to an amount between £ 400,000 and £ 3,500,000 (as of 2010).
