Birán

Birán is a small town in the Municipios Mayarí in the Holguín province in eastern Cuba . It is located about 30 km southwest of the city of Mayarí on the edge of the Sierra de Nipe, and about 100 km north of Santiago de Cuba .

Fidel Castro and his siblings were born in Birán . Her father Ángel Castro Argiz managed a 10,000 hectare sugar cane plantation here and in the surrounding area , 777 hectares of which were owned and 9,712 hectares were leased.

In 2009 the municipality of Birán was declared a National Monument ( Monumento Nacional ) because of its outstanding historical value as the birthplace of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution .
