Holguín is a province in northeast Cuba . Its capital is the city of the same name, Holguín . Until the administrative reform in 1976, it was part of the much larger province of Oriente . Sugar and coffee production as well as mining are the most economically important industries in the province.

geography

The province of Holguín has a total area of ​​9215.72 km². In the north the Atlantic forms the natural border, in the southeast and south the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba . The provinces of Granma and Las Tunas join in the south-west and north-west.

Part of the Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve is in the province.

history

On October 28, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba on his first voyage of discovery. He set foot on Cuban soil for the first time at the site of today's Municipios Rafael Freyre .

The most famous sons of the province are the brothers Fidel and Raúl Castro . Dictator Fulgencio Batista also comes from here.

Administrative division

The province of Holguín is divided into 14 Municipios . With the exception of Calixto García, Frank País and Rafael Freyre, the administrative offices are located in the cities of the same name.
