Granma is a province in southeastern Cuba . Their capital is Bayamo . Until the administrative reform in 1976, it was part of the much larger province of Oriente .

geography

The province of Granma has a total area of ​​8,374.24 km². In the west the Gulf of Guacanayabo forms the natural border, in the south the Caribbean . The provinces of Las Tunas , Holguín and Santiago de Cuba join in the north, northwest and west. The Sierra Maestra mountain range lies largely in the administrative area of ​​the Granma province.

At the border with the neighboring province of Santiago de Cuba lies the highest point in the country at 1974 m, the Pico Turquino . The Desembarco del Granma National Park was founded in 1986 in the southeastern tip of the province .

history

With the landing of the revolutionaries from Mexico around Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara with the yacht Granma , the Cuban revolution began on December 2, 1956 in what is now the province of Granma . At that time the revolutionaries had established their headquarters, the Comandancia General de La Plata , in the middle of the Sierra Maestra. In memory of these events, the province was given its current name as part of an administrative reform in 1976.
