Bayamo is the capital of the municipality of the same name and the province of Granma in eastern Cuba . It is located at the northern foot of the Sierra Maestra and has 235,107 inhabitants (2012). The city is known as the “cradle of the Cuban nation” because of its historical and cultural merits.
The place was founded on November 5, 1513 by Diego Velázquez as Villa de San Salvador . After Baracoa , it is the second oldest of the settlement founded by the Spanish conquistadors in Cuba. In 1868 the Battle of Bayamo took place during the struggle for independence. The rebels burned the city in 1869 to keep it from falling into the hands of the enemy. One of the participating rebels, Pedro Figueredo , took the battle as a template for his song La Bayamesa , which has been used as the Cuban national anthem since 1902 .
