Bartolomé Masó Márquez is a city and a municipality (district) in the Cuban province of Granma . The name was given in 1960 in memory of the independence fighter Bartolomé Masó Márquez .

The municipality is located in the north of the Sierra Maestra and borders to the north with the municipality Yara , south with Guamá , province Santiago de Cuba , in the east with Buey Arriba and in the west with Pilón , Manzanillo and Yara. Today it has an area of ​​628.8 km², where 56,460 people live, which means a population density of 89.8 people per square kilometer. 73 percent of the population live in rural, often inaccessible regions.

history

The roots of today's settlement go back to the time of the Conquista in the 16th century, when Cuba was colonized by the Spanish . From 1868 the region was one of the main theaters of the independence struggle against Spain. Later during the Cuban Revolution , the region formed the first eastern front in the fight against the Batista dictatorship. In the mountains of the Sierra Maestra was the command headquarters of Fidel Castro . After the victory of the revolution, the first law on agrarian reform was signed here in May 1959.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main branch of the economy in the municipality of Bartolomé Masó is agriculture. Mainly sugar cane , coffee and various other agricultural products are grown. In addition, forestry and animal husbandry are of greater importance. In the municipality there are 134 primary schools , eight secundarias básicas , four pre-university institutes, a technical and vocational school, a special school, an administration school and a school for adult education.

There are also three hospitals, a polyclinic , 139 doctors, 116 family doctors and 29 dentists.

There are 15,861 residential units in the municipality, of which 87.2 percent are electrified.
