The Comandancia General de La Plata or Comandancia General del Ejercito Rebelde en La Plata (Spanish for: "General Command of the Rebel Army in La Plata") was the headquarters of the revolutionaries around Fidel Castro in the Cuban Revolution . It is located in the municipality of Bartolomé Masó in the province of Granma in the area of the "Gran Parque Nacional Turquino". In 1978 the Comandancia General was declared a national monument.

history

Fidel Castro's bed in the Comandancia

In the middle of the dense forests of the Sierra Maestra , not far from the 1,974 m high summit of Pico Turquino , the revolutionaries hid in the beginning of the revolution after landing with the motor yacht Granma . Among the 16 erected wooden huts there were also functional buildings, such as the hospital of Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara , the radio station Radio Rebelde , a kitchen, an armory, a pantry and a "casa tribunal" ( court martial ). A hut served as accommodation for the Comandante en jefe Fidel Castro. Old utensils such as bottles, pots, ammunition as well as sewing machines and typewriters still paint an authentic picture of the headquarters.

The headquarters gained international fame after the US journalist Herbert L. Matthews of the New York Times interviewed the revolutionary leader Fidel Castro in the Comandancia General in early 1957. The first documentary film recordings, shot over several months in 1958 by the Austrian Erik Durschmied , were broadcast on North American television shortly after the revolutionaries' victory in 1959.
