Ramón Eusebio Castro Ruz (born October 14, 1924 in Birán , Cuba ; † February 23, 2016 in Havana , Cuba), also known as Mongo , was the older brother of Fidel and Raúl Castro and the oldest child of Ángel Castro Argiz and Lina Ruz Gonzalez.

His father Ángel Castro, a Galician who originally came to Cuba as a Spanish soldier in the Cuban War of Independence , was a large landowner who had become rich as a sugar cane farmer. His mother was first a maid in the Castro house when Ángel Castro was still married to Lidia Argota in his first marriage. The father did not recognize Ramón, as did the rest of the siblings who came from the relationship with Lina, until 1943. Ramón Castro was 19 years old at the time.

Castro was arrested in 1953 during the Batista dictatorship and later joined the July 26th Movement during the Revolution and organized supply lines for the Eastern Front. After the revolution he became an important advisor to the Cuban government on agricultural issues . He founded several state-owned companies, including those that dealt with the transport of sugar cane and the cultivation of oranges. He was in the field of agriculture influential than the responsible ministers , but even had little direct power. Ramón Castro Ruz was a founding member of the Communist Party of Cuba and Vice President of the National Assembly . Ramón Castro carried the honorary title “Hero of the Labor of the Republic of Cuba”.

At the time of his death, Ramón Castro no longer held a political position. He was married to Aurora Castillo and had five children. He lived on a farm outside Havana .
