The Forum Duisburg is a shopping center in the Duisburg city center, which was opened on 18 September, 2008. With a sales area of 57,000 m², it is one of the largest inner-city centers in Germany.

history

For decades, the city of Duisburg had to complain about an outflow of purchasing power into the surrounding cities and shopping centers (e.g. CentrO ). Initial considerations as to how this trend could be counteracted led to the planning of building a shopping center on a wasteland at the main train station. With around 160,000 m², MultiCasa was to become the largest inner-city shopping center in Germany. After the first investor had canceled, the concept was revised and the new planning provided for a retail space of only 70,000 m², when ECE took over as the investor . A date for the start of construction and the opening had been set and the first anchor tenants had also been found. But although the city administration and the mayor, based on a positive study, endorsed the realization of the shopping center, a council decision of June 27, 2005 against the votes of the SPD and FDP overturned it at the last minute. At the same time, there were already plans for another shopping center, the “Forum Duisburg”, with Karstadt as the anchor tenant and AM Development as the project developer. After the end of “MultiCasa”, construction began on September 7, 2005 with the symbolic demolition of a small building on the site.

The demolition work was then delayed several times, including the bankruptcy of the demolition company and a neighborhood lawsuit. The foundation stone was then laid on February 23, 2007 and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on July 14, 2007.

architecture

Right wing

The Forum Duisburg consists of several parts of the building that are grouped together by a glass roof. Each of these parts has its own architecture and facade design, both inside and outside the mall. A small new shopping district is emerging in the city. Due to this open construction and the glass surfaces and windows, it is also not a "temple of artificial light". Even the basement and the underground car park in the second basement receive daylight. There are also two roof terraces. One is used by Karstadt gastronomy, the other for the outdoor area of the day-care center. The entire roof area is green.

A special feature is the 65 m high "golden ladder" made of fire-refined gold leaf, which makes the forum recognizable from afar.

Furthermore, the listed facade of an otherwise demolished former bank on Claubergstrasse is integrated into the building.

facts and figures

The golden ladder to shopping heaven

Before the construction of the forum began, the Karstadt house, the Spaeter administration and other properties were located here. The building plot has an area of almost 20,000 m², the gross floor area is over 100,000 m².

According to current statements, there are 80 shops on 57,000 m² in the forum, which attract customers from Duisburg, the Ruhr area , the Lower Rhine and the Netherlands . An average of 30,000 to 40,000 visitors are expected every day.

In addition to Karstadt, Saturn and C&A as anchor tenants , Mayersche Buchhandlung , H&M , dm-drogerie markt , New Yorker, Pohland Herrenmoden, Roland, Apollo Optik, WMF, S.Oliver, Douglas , Esprit, GameStop, McPaper, Dismer, The Sting and others moved into the center. The current occupancy rate is 97 percent.

There is a day-care center in the shopping center, which offers two fixed groups as well as free care for the customers' children.

The shopping center was named the best retail center in Europe in the "Large" category at the annual ICSC ( International Council of Shopping Centers ) congress in 2010.

location

The forum is located directly on König-Heinrich-Platz and thus in the center of the main pedestrian zone in Duisburg. Opposite is another center, the CityPalais , which opened in 2007.

Transport links

The Forum Duisburg is connected to all parts of the city, the region and long-distance transport as well as abroad (especially the Netherlands). It is located directly at the underground station "King Henry Square" where the tram lines DVG and the Subway 79 of DVG / Rheinbahn hold. There is also an underground connection to the underground station. Several bus lines also stop in the rear area of the forum. The main train station can also be reached on foot or by bus and train .

The forum can be reached by car via the Duisburg-Innenstadt exit of the nearby federal motorway 59 - the Duisburg city motorway. A dynamic parking guidance system was installed in Duisburg especially because of the new shopping center. Unlike competing shopping centers in neighboring cities, Forum Duisburg does not offer free parking.
