Centro (former spelling CentrO ) is the name of a shopping center in Oberhausen . It forms the heart of the new center of the city.

Overview

The Centro in Oberhausen is a shopping and leisure center with 125,000 m² of retail space and a total of over 830,000 m² of operating space. Over 250 retail stores are spread over two and sometimes three levels of the shopping center . The Coca-Cola Oasis is the second largest food court in Europe with 1,100 seats , only surpassed by that of the Trafford Center in Manchester with 1,600 seats.

Sea Life Oberhausen

There are a number of tourist attractions on the Centro site and in the immediate vicinity, for example the König-Pilsener-Arena , a multiplex cinema , the Heinz Schleusser Marina with the Sea Life aquarium and the leisure harbor as a multifunctional hall for major events , as an exhibition hall and vantage point of the Gasometer Oberhausen , as a museum, gallery and event center the Schloss Oberhausen, as a musical theater the Metronom Theater and the adventure pool AQUApark, which opened in 2009 . Development and history

As part of the structural change in the Ruhr area , the 143 hectare industrial site of the Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen, which was last owned by Thyssen AG , became fallow land . The city of Oberhausen was now looking for investors to re-use the space. In 1991 the English investor group Stadium acquired part of the site from Edwin D. Healey in order to develop the nucleus for the new center of Oberhausen with the Centro . Previously, an even more ambitious project by the Canadian company Triple Five had been discussed, which the press dubbed Superhausen .

The project costs amounted to over DM 2 billion.

The template for the Centro was the British shopping center Meadowhall in northeast Sheffield . Strikingly similar structures exist, for example, in the oasis and the long corridors of the shopping center.

In terms of construction and design, the Centro shopping and leisure center is an outstanding example of postmodern architecture . With the facades made of brick, plaster, steel and glass, it shows echoes of traditional industrial architecture . A stronger mix of styles and designs can be found especially in the area of ​​the so-called promenade.

In 2014 it became known that the investor group Stadium intends to withdraw from the Centro. Stadium sold 50% of the shopping center to Unibail-Rodamco , which the EU Commission's antitrust authority approved in May 2014. In 2011 Stadium had already sold the first 50% to the Canadian pension fund Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB).

From May 2017, the Centro will be extensively modernized for 20 million euros. The new logo represents a first step in this direction. The Coca-Cola oasis in particular is to change from 2018 onwards.

From September 24, 1999 to June 30, 2001, the musical Tabaluga and Lilli (by Peter Maffay among others) was performed in the Neue Mitte . However, this was not profitable and was abandoned. The corresponding theater, which was specially designed for the Maffay musical (shape of a dragon), was then called Theatro Centro and is now used for other purposes under the name Metronom Theater . From November 7, 2008 to January 31, 2010, Roman Polański's musical Tanz der Vampire was performed there. On March 8, 2010 the musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz celebrated its premiere in the Metronom Theater and ran until September 2011. From October 19, 2011 to October 8, 2012, the musical Dirty Dancing followed . From December 5, 2012 to October 24, 2013, the musical I've Never Been To New York was performed.

Since September 1, 2007, the Centro has been basically smoke-free. The outside areas of the gastronomy are an exception, where there are individual deviations from the smoking ban.

On September 20, 2004, the City Council of Oberhausen decided to amend the building plan for an extension of the shopping center by up to 30,000 m² of floor space . The cities of Bottrop , Dinslaken , Essen , Gelsenkirchen , Gladbeck , Moers and Mülheim an der Ruhr as well as the district government of the administrative district of Düsseldorf (for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia) filed norms control complaints with the Higher Administrative Court in December 2004 against the development plan change . In the course of the proceedings, the cities of Gladbeck, Moers and Mülheim an der Ruhr withdrew their complaints. The Higher Administrative Court rejected the remaining complaints in its rulings on June 6, 2005 as unfounded. The Higher Administrative Court ruled that the planning is justified in terms of urban development and that there is no legal objection to the disputed points. In particular, it found that the planning does not violate spatial planning objectives . The Federal Administrative Court , which was then seized , decided on December 28, 2005 that the judgments of the Higher Administrative Court did not require a revision . Thus, the judgments of the Higher Administrative Court have legal force. The judgments were of decisive importance for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia when it was judicially determined that parts of the state development program , the state development plan and the area development plan for the administrative district of Düsseldorf do not have any legal effect as a spatial planning objective. As a result, the state saw itself compelled to develop new state planning regulations to control large-scale retail.

In a press release by the city of Oberhausen at the beginning of June 2008, it was stated that the expansion of the Galeria Kaufhof was already under construction, that construction work on the most important new construction phase would start in the first half of 2009 and that the completion and opening of an additional 23,000 m² of retail space in this construction phase planned for autumn 2010. This expansion would create around 700 jobs. The parking space capacity should be expanded to 14,000 spaces. In March 2009 it was announced that further expansion measures would be postponed for the time being due to uncertainties as a result of the financial crisis .

In January 2011 the construction of the extension by 17,000 m² sales area started. The opening took place on September 27, 2012. The sales area had already been significantly expanded by expanding the Galeria Kaufhof and adding and integrating a new, two-story sales building, which is used by the Saturn electronics store.

In December 2014, the Centro announced that existing shops would be expanded by adding an extension over the next few years. This is a reaction to the trend towards “ mega stores ”. In this context, an area expansion by a further 3,000 m² sales area was realized for the company H & M as well as a further expansion of various shops by an extension in the middle area of ​​the mall (between the Sinn-Leffers sales house and the parking garage). The total sales area is currently 125,000 m².
