prolog

The frightened student Alfred is looking for his companion and mentor Professor Abronsius in the snow of Transylvania. He is on a research mission to prove his theories about vampirism in front of those suspicious in Königsberg. Alfred finds him completely frozen and carries him away.

first act

In an inn where they have been taken care of, the two find the first clue about vampires: garlic. But everyone denies believing in the existence of vampires, and the landlord, Chagal, even denies knowing anything about a castle nearby.

While Professor Abronsius continues to try to find the vampires, Alfred falls in love with Sarah, the host's beautiful daughter. But the young student is not the only one, because Count von Krolock, a vampire, also has an eye on the beautiful Sarah and lures her into his castle.

Her father immediately sets out to save her and becomes a victim of the vampires himself. Professor Abronsius wants to stake the dead Chagal immediately to prevent him from being resurrected as a vampire and from joining the count. However, his wife Rebecca refuses and a little later the landlord wakes up as a vampire. Magda, who is mourning his supposed corpse, quickly becomes his victim.

During the night, Professor Abronsius and Alfred want to complete the former landlord's previously failed stake, but notice that he is already a vampire. However, they can persuade Chagal to lead them to the castle of Count von Krolock. He receives them and introduces them to his homosexual son Herbert, who immediately wants to have found a person in Alfred who takes his boredom away. The Count persuades them to stay the night by luring the professor with plenty of study material.

Second act

During the night Alfred has a terrible nightmare in which Sarah is bitten by Krolock. The next morning it is clear to him: he has to find Sarah immediately. But Abronsius first wants to put an end to vampirism, and so they go in search of the family crypt to stake the two vampires. However, this mission turns into a disaster: When descending to the crypt, Professor Abronsius gets stuck and Alfred alone does not have the heart to stake the undead. Shortly afterwards, Chagal and Magda arrive in the crypt and have found pleasure in being vampires by sucking each other out. Then the professor and Alfred find a large library. While the professor admires the hundred thousand books, Alfred hears singing. He follows the voice and finds Sarah bathing. He tries to persuade her to flee together, but she wants to stay because of the ball that is being held in the castle.

In an old book "Counselor for Lovers - How to Win a Heart", Alfred seeks help on how to convince his beloved and goes to her a second time, but finds Herbert in the bathroom. He begins the hunt for Alfred, and when Herbert tries to drill his canine teeth victoriously into Alfred's neck, Alfred just manages to push the book towards him so that his teeth drill into the book. Abronsius frees Alfred from this predicament.

At night, the invited guests, relatives of the Count, gather for the annual ball. As a highlight, Count von Krolock bites Sarah, who gives herself to him.

Professor Abronsius and Alfred overpower two ball guests and put on their clothes in order to escape from the castle with Sarah. So they sneak up on the ball to save Sarah, but have to take part in a dance of the vampires for camouflage reasons. A mirror has been set up in the ballroom and since vampires do not have mirror images, Alfred and the professor are recognized. The three manage to form a cross with two arm lights. As a result, all the vampires present go to the ground, and so the three can finally escape. Only Krolock's servant Koukol pursues them, but he falls victim to the wolves.

In the wilderness, Alfred, Sarah and Abronsius rest for a moment. While the professor is taking notes, Alfred and Sarah dream of a new, beautiful life - but then you see Sarah's vampire teeth, which she knocks into Alfred's neck, so that he too becomes a vampire. So in the end the vampires triumph and celebrate this with a dance of the vampires.

Musical backgrounds

Many of the pieces of music or parts of them come from earlier works by Jim Steinman:

  • One of the most famous songs and recurring theme from the musical, Totale Finsternis , corresponds to the song Total Eclipse of the Heart , with which Bonnie Tyler topped numerous charts in 1983. Total Eclipse was voted “Greatest Musical Hit of All Time” by the German musical and television audience in the summer of 2006.
  • For the song by Count von Krolock insatiable greed served Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are of Meat Loaf album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell as a template.
  • The finale The Dance of the Vampires is originally from the soundtrack to Streets of Fire , there was the piece Tonight is what it Means to be young and was designed by Stone's Project Fire Inc. interpreted.
  • The pieces God is dead , invitation to the ball and dance hall are based on the song Original Sin , which appeared for the first time on the album of the same name by Pandora's Box and in 1994 by Taylor Dayne for the soundtrack to the movie Shadow and the Curse of Khan and a year later by Meat Loaf was re-recorded for the album Welcome to the Neighborhood .
  • The piece Ewigkeit comes from Steinman's musical Neverland and can also be found as Great Boleros of Fire (Live Intro) on the Bat Out of Hell - 25th Anniversary Edition . It can also be found as Godz on Meatloaf's album Braver Than We Are .
  • In front of the castle is also from Steinman's musical Neverland and corresponds to the title City Night . The melody of the vocal line ( "Because if you love this life, your love will be life" ) is also used in Steinman's Left In The Dark on his album Bad For Good (later also used by Meat Loaf on the album Welcome to the Neighborhood , however without the melody).
  • The overture , the introduction to the musical, corresponds to the song The Storm , which is often used in Steinman productions, e.g. B .:
  • The original of the piece can be found in Steinman's musical The Dream Engine , there as a pure electric guitar version .
  • First track of Steinman's solo album Bad for Good
  • Excerpt from it as the beginning of the second act of Steinman's and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Whistle down the Wind used

  • The fast piano and electric guitar intro by Carpe Noctem can be found in Meat Loaf's version of Good Girls Go The Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere) on the album Bat out of Hell II: Back Into Hell , but not in the original the album Original Sin by Pandora's Box .
  • The fast piano and electric guitar part in the middle of Carpe Noctem originally appeared in the 1984 Steinman song Nowhere Fast , which can be found on the album Streets of Fire - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and is interpreted by Fire Inc. . This song is also the opening song in the movie Streets in Flames ; there it is interpreted by Fire Inc. It can later be found on Meat Loaf's 1993 album Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell and is cited again in the title track Back into Hell .
  • The piece Das Gebet, or stronger than we are , was added to the musical in 2000 for the staging in Stuttgart and can be found in parts of Going All The Way (A Song in 6 Movements) on Meatloaf's album Braver Than We Are .
  • The song Fühl die Nacht (Carpe Noctem) was released as Seize the Night on Meat Loaf's album Bat out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose in 2006 , but the musical version is the original. It also appears in Going All The Way (A Song in 6 Movements) on Meatloaf's album Braver Than We Are .
  • The part On such a day in the song In der Gruft largely corresponds to the song Who needs the young , which later appeared on Meat Loaf's album Braver Than We Are and is also used in Steinman's musical Bat Out of Hell .
