history
The Hotel Stuttgart International (today: Dormero Hotel Stuttgart), from which the name for the center was borrowed, stood on the site of today's SI-Center since 1960 . This is located on the map shown above as an elongated rectangle in the yellow area (bottom right). At the beginning of the 1990s, a so-called urban entertainment center was built around the hotel on behalf of the musical operator Stella AG , which, in addition to the hotel, should also offer a musical, a shopping area and wellness options. The hotel, which was expanded to include the striking hotel tower, operated from now on under the name Copthorne Hotel Stuttgart International .
Construction of an extension began just one year after the opening of the SI complex (1994). Another musical hall was built and both musicals were connected underground. Furthermore, an extensive shopping and gastronomy complex was built, in which several themed restaurants and bars were located.
Mathematically, the SI now had a capacity of around 3,600 musical visitors. In addition to the 450 rooms in the Copthorne, another hotel (the former Stella Suites and today's SI Suites) was built. The Cinemaxx group also set up a cinema center directly in the complex. In 1997 the extension was opened. The hotel renamed itself internally and was now called Millennium Hotel & Resort Stuttgart (today: Dormero Hotel).
At first the Stella concept (under the direction of the Swabian entrepreneur Rolf Deyhle ) seemed to be a successful concept. But it quickly became apparent that rents and prices were too high, so that the occupancy rate fell short of expectations. The initial public offering of Stella announced for 1997 was postponed. In 1998 Deyhle first admitted financial problems. The state of Baden-Württemberg later guaranteed 15 million euros, and the Landesbank took over eight percent of the Stella shares. Nevertheless, the company had to file for bankruptcy in 1999.
In April 2002 the Dutch Stage Entertainment took over a large part of the Stella shares. Deyhle himself handed over responsibility for Stella AG to a bank consortium in 1998, one year before the bankruptcy.
On September 1, 2011, the Millennium Hotel was renamed and is now called Dormero Hotel Stuttgart under new management. Extensive renovations were carried out by July 2012.
