The Vaihingen lies at kilometer 15.6 of Gäubahn and is a station in the network of S-Bahn Stuttgart as well as a hub in the public transport on the Filderebene .
history
With the opening of the Gäubahn from Stuttgart to Freudenstadt on September 2, 1879, the inauguration of the train station in Vaihingen on the Fildern took place. At the time, it was located about 400 meters southeast of the village and consisted of the reception building that is still preserved today and a goods handling hall .
In 1891 the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft decided to build a line from Möhringen to Vaihinger Bahnhof, which the royal government approved on April 14, 1896. After a year and a half of construction, the first train reached Vaihingen on December 23, 1897. The meter- gauge narrow - gauge tracks were east of the standard-gauge state railway tracks. A trolley pit was built in the station in 1898 , as the entire freight traffic of the Filderbahn to Degerloch , Hohenheim and Neuhausen on the Fildern ran via Vaihingen . In 1902 the Filderbahn company replaced the narrow-gauge tracks with three- rail tracks for freight traffic, in 1904 electrified the Degerloch – Vaihingen section and built a connection from Wallgraben to Schillerplatz ( Vaihingen Ort stop ) with an overpass over the state railway.
On November 22, 1905, the state railway put a second track into operation between Stuttgart's Westbahnhof and Böblingen . The station was expanded with additional tracks over the next two years. In order to avoid confusion with the station Vaihingen (Enz) Staatsbahnhof (until 1906 Vaihingen-Sersheim ) on the Westbahn , the official signage in Vaihingen (Filder) has changed .
Due to the war, the Württembergische Nebenbahnen AG (successor to the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft) stopped the connection to Vaihingen Ort on April 15, 1915. It was not reactivated - now as the Städtische Filderbahn - until October 28, 1929, when the connection to the Stuttgart tram was also established.
After Vaihingen was incorporated into the city of Stuttgart on April 1, 1942, the station name changed a second time, namely in Stuttgart-Vaihingen .
On May 15, 1944, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) stopped passenger traffic from Möhringen to the Vaihingen train station and the trams only went to the center of the town.
The connecting track to Möhringen continued to be used for freight traffic until it was terminated in 1981. It was then available to the SSB until 2008, among other things, for transferring underground vehicles and has since ended at a buffer stop in the Ruppmannstrasse / Kupferstrasse area. With the construction of a loop that led over Herrenbergerstrasse and Emilienstraße, new stops were created in 1963 (today replaced by the Jurastraße stop ), one near the station, at the end of Vollmoellerstraße directly at the ("Staatsbahn -" / DB-) station.
With the electrification of the Stuttgart – Böblingen line on May 26, 1963, the Stuttgart-Vaihingen train station was also integrated into Stuttgart's electric suburban traffic .
Integration into the S-Bahn traffic
In the course of the S-Bahn expansion, the Federal Railroad completely rebuilt the station between 1980 and 1985. They moved the goods handling to the eastern side and closed the level crossing on Mitterwurzerstraße. The platforms were raised according to the S-Bahn standard. At the same time, a parking facility for S-Bahn trains ending here was built south of the station . On the station forecourt , the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG inaugurated a four-track light rail stop.
In March 1982, construction work began on a new, DM 24 million, central signal box in Vaihingen. Its first expansion phase was put into operation on November 8, 1984. Further track systems followed by July 1985. This signal box controls, among other things, train traffic on the Gäubahn to Stuttgart-Rohr and on the S-Bahn connecting line from Stuttgart Schwabstraße . After several total failures in 2014 and 2015, the signal box was prone to failure. The relay interlocking is to be integrated into a digital interlocking in Stuttgart by 2025 .
Regional traffic stop
With the commissioning of the connecting line on September 29, 1985, the S-Bahn began; since then, no regional trains have stopped in Stuttgart-Vaihingen.
According to information from VCD Baden-Württemberg in 2015, the regional transport platform was not built when the S-Bahn was expanded in 1985 out of excessive economy.
In the course of the protests against the Stuttgart 21 rail project and from neighborhood initiatives, some citizen groups spoke out in favor of reintroducing a regional express stop in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. At least four months before the Stuttgart 21 railway junction goes into operation, the Gäubahn in the inner city area is to be shut down to enable the construction of new S-Bahn tracks in the area of the north station . During this time, regional trains will stop and end at Vaihingen station to enable a change to the S-Bahn.
The state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart commissioned a potential study for a long-distance and regional train stop in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, which was presented in January 2014. This includes the construction of a new platform on tracks 4 and 6 with barrier-free access for regional trains traveling in the direction of Stuttgart . The platform on track 1 is to be extended by 170 m at a height of 76 cm for regional trains traveling in the direction of Böblingen. In addition, the platform on track 1 is to be temporarily extended by 24 m for low entry into long-distance vehicles, and the measure will be dismantled after Stuttgart 21 has gone into operation.
DB Netz AG initially put the costs of the necessary infrastructure measures at around three million euros. The study expects an increase in the number of passengers transferring at the train station to 2040 (without long-distance traffic stop) or 3060 (with long-distance traffic stop). The actual passenger gain is put at 360 to 540 passengers. Between Herrenberg and Böblingen are doing an average of 1.5 percent fewer commuter train users expected between Vaihingen and Schwabstraße an increase in demand is expected. The Verband Region Stuttgart expects less stability on the Gäubahn between Böblingen and Vaihingen. For the additional stop, travel time would be extended by up to two minutes.
During a top-level discussion on March 6, 2015, representatives of the Stuttgart 21 project partners agreed to set up a permanent regional traffic stop at Stuttgart-Vaihingen train station. The forecast planning and construction costs of initially five million euros currently (2019) amount to around 7.2 million euros and are to be borne by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Baden-Württemberg Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann , announced in May 2015 that the regional traffic stop would be implemented for the timetable change in December 2017. Discussions about the implementation were in progress, an agreement with Deutsche Bahn should be concluded before the 2015 summer vacation .
At the beginning of November 2015, the state, rail, city and VRS agreed on the expansion of the station. A 210 m long platform is to be built between the previous through tracks 4 and 6. One option is to expand platform track 1 by 160 meters. The cost of the expansion will be borne by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Representatives of the Ministry of Transport and DB Station & Service AG signed a corresponding planning agreement. The preliminary draft planning should be completed in the second half of 2016. Early public participation is then planned at the latest.
The planning approval decision was issued on January 22, 2019. By the end of 2019, track 5 in the station was largely dismantled to create space for the new platform.
The new platform should go into operation at the time of the timetable change at the end of 2020.The implementation will be postponed to the end of 2021 after no bids were received in response to the project tender. Regional trains and part of the Intercity are to stop in Stuttgart-Vaihingen as soon as they are completed. After the Gäubahn is capped in the valley basin, Stuttgart-Vaihingen is to serve as the final stop for long-distance and regional traffic, with a change to the S-Bahn. After the commissioning of Stuttgart 21, an amplifier train will stop every hour during rush hour.
The Stuttgart Region Association decided on April 22, 2020 to commission planning (work phases 1 to 4) for additional points connections to connect the regional platform to the S-Bahn and to extend the regional platform to a usable length of 210 m.
Travel center
At the Vaihingen train station, Deutsche Bahn offers advice and ticket sales by staff. This travel center is not located in the old station building, but in a new pavilion-like building towards the bus station .
In the immediate vicinity of the train station there are two of the tallest skyscrapers in Stuttgart : the Colorado Tower in the direction of the industrial park and the Pullmann Hotel "Fontana".
Rail operations
The station has three platform tracks and is served by the Stuttgart S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3 and S11. The S-Bahn in the direction of Herrenberg stop at platform 1. The S-Bahn (S-Bahn) in the direction of the airport / exhibition center runs on platform 2 and all three lines in the direction of Stuttgart Hbf on platform 3 .
The regional and long-distance trains to Rottweil , Freudenstadt , Singen and Zurich pass platform 1 without stopping; for the opposite direction use a track without a platform (track 4).

The Verband Region Stuttgart intends to enable overturning (and thus greater turning time reserves) in Stuttgart-Vaihingen in the future by purchasing additional S-Bahn vehicles.
The Scharr Wärme company siding is located in the southern area of the station. Tank wagons are regularly delivered there.

The Stuttgart-Vaihingen stop is between the Stuttgart-Österfeld and Stuttgart-Rohr stops .

A traffic forecast presented in January 2020 for the year 2030 expects 70,600 passengers per day between Vaihingen and Österfeld, and 61,200 passengers between Rohr and Vaihingen. A progressive scenario envisages running two trains per hour on the S5 line, which now end at Schwabstrasse, via Stuttgart-Vaihingen to Ehningen. In addition, the basic cycle of the S60 line from Schwabstrasse to Vaihingen station is to be extended.
Light rail
The four-track tram end stop Vaihingen Bahnhof is on the station forecourt . The first two tracks (tracks 11 and 12) serve the U3 and U8 lines, the other two tracks (tracks 13 and 14) serve the U1 line.
