The Herrenberg Station is located on the Gäubahn and is the endpoint of Ammertalbahn . Since it is served by Regional Express trains and here both the Stuttgart S-Bahn line S1 and the regional trains from Tübingen and Bondorf end, it is an important hub in local transport . In morning traffic from Monday to Friday it is also a pair of trains otherwise in Freudenstadt Hauptbahnhof or Bondorf ending Karlsruhe light rail line S8 / S81 to Herrenberg by bound. It is located southwest of the old town of Herrenberg .

In the middle of the 19th century , the citizens of the Oberamtsstadt Herrenberg lived mainly from agriculture. The cultivation of sugar beets and hops appeared to be the most profitable . In order to supply the Böblinger sugar factory and the breweries more quickly and to obtain the faeces from the Stuttgart latrines as cheap fertilizer, Herrenberg campaigned for a connection to the railway network in the 1860s. The cities of Böblingen and Freudenstadt also took part . But because of the difficult geographical conditions, the Royal Württemberg State Railroad , after a vote in the state parliament, did not want to set up the desired connection from Stuttgart via the western Filder Plain and the Upper Gäu to the northern Black Forest for the time being. It was not until November 1873 that the construction of the railway line, which was given the name Gäubahn , began.

On September 2, 1879, the state railway opened the route. At that time, the Herrenberg station had a goods shed that had since been demolished . In that year the drive from Stuttgart to Herrenberg took one hour and 22 minutes, but there was still confidence that the royal seat had come a little closer. The facility had to be expanded for freight traffic as early as the 1880s . In addition to the city of Herrenberg, the surrounding communities of Kuppingen , Unter- and Oberjettingen , and Affstätt also contributed to the costs , although its residents were still hoping for their own station.

The railroad management's traffic planners envisaged a connection from the Gäubahn to Tübingen from the start. The member of the Upper Office of Böblingen , Otto Elben , always tried to get this important branch in Böblingen. But in 1900 it was finally clear that Herrenberg should be the starting point of the railway line to the Upper Neckar Railway . The route through the valley of the Ammer was less complex and costly than that through the Schönbuch . At that time there were plans for a route from Herrenberg to Calw , Althengstett or Wildberg . Those responsible decided on Wildberg and offered two route variants to choose from. One led over Kuppingen and ceiling Pfronn , the other over Kuppingen and Untersulz . Without further scrutiny of the proposal, the management of the state railroad rejected it and never submitted it to the state parliament. Their reason was that the railway line would have been in direct competition with the Nagold Valley Railway .

An extension of the station was necessary for the Ammertalbahn . As a new junction, it received several new tracks, a signal box and a locomotive depot with a turntable and a water tower . The Ammertal Railway could be used from August 12, 1909, initially to Pfäffingen , and from May 1, 1910 to Tübingen.

On September 25, 1966, the German Federal Railroad stopped passenger traffic between Herrenberg and Entringen and in 1973 dismantled the tracks between Herrenberg and Validstein .

On September 13, 1971, a relay interlocking (type Sp Dr L30 ) went into operation in Herrenberg . The Gärtringen signal box from Herrenberg , which was put into operation in 1974, has been remote-controlled since December 1999 . With the electrification of the Böblingen – Horb line on September 26, 1974, the Herrenberg train station was also integrated into Stuttgart's electric suburban traffic.

On December 6, 1992, the station was integrated into the Stuttgart S-Bahn network by extending the S1 line, which had previously ended in Böblingen . After the local public transport association in Ammertal acquired the Ammertalbahn from Deutsche Bahn AG in 1996 , the restoration of the rail route between Herrenberg and Validstein began. The Ammertalbahn has been in continuous operation again since August 1st, 1999.

Reception building and station area

The Herrenberg reception building, which has been preserved, houses a DB travel center , a train station kiosk, a DHL packing station and two snack bars on the ground floor . These are located in a connecting building. Rental apartments are provided on the two upper floors. In the immediate vicinity of the train station there is a Park & ​​Ride parking lot with 400 parking spaces and a DB BahnPark with 122 parking spaces, two covered bicycle parking spaces, an e-bike station opened on June 23, 2015, a public toilet and the two central bus stations.

Herrenberg station is a railway junction on the Gäubahn , where the Ammertalbahn branches off.

Track 1 is assigned to the Intercity & Regional Express trains to Stuttgart Hbf. The S-Bahn line S1 starts and ends on platform 2. The S-Bahns end on track 3 before they are parked or turned in the rear track field. The Intercity & Regional Express trains to Rottweil , Freudenstadt and Singen am Hohentwiel stop on platform 4 . Tracks 101 and 102 are end tracks . The regional trains in the direction of Tübingen / Reutlingen / Bad Urach and Bondorf / Eutingen im Gäu as well as the light rail line S81 to Karlsruhe Hbf (continue as S32 to Menzingen), which runs Monday to Friday mornings, start there.
