Rottweil train station around 1900

Construction work began in 1865. During the work, the remains of about 2,000 Russian soldiers were found. They had died of an epidemic about 50 years earlier. They found their final resting place in a mass grave on the site of the train station. The station was opened on July 23, 1868.

Originally the station was 685 meters long and up to 162 meters wide. The facility included an administration building and a goods shed as well as two locomotive sheds and a repair shop.

On August 11, 1972, a freight train with 26 cars derailed . Among other things, six tank cars with caustic soda came off the track and overturned. 30,000 liters of caustic soda leaked out and the volunteer fire brigade was able to prevent an oxyhydrogen gas explosion , which was helped by a sudden downpour. Nobody was injured, the property damage amounted to around 750,000  DM .

Traffic significance

In Rottweil, the Rottweil – Villingen line connects to the Stuttgart – Singen Gäubahn . On the latter, in addition to regional trains and regional express trains, there are also intercity trains every two hours that stop in Rottweil. In the past, they were supplemented by Intercity Express and Cisalpino trains (the latter for the Stuttgart- Milan route ). Parts of both railway lines form part of the ring train system operated by the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn . Until 1971, Rottweil was also the end point of the Balingen – Rottweil railway line .

The station is also an important stop for urban and regional bus services .
