The Stuttgart Neckarpark train station is located at 5.6 km of the Filstalbahn and is a station in the Stuttgart S-Bahn network .

history

The Cannstatter Wasen has been a fairground and exhibition area since the 19th century . In 1928 the city of Stuttgart exchanged the Wasen, which had previously belonged to the state of Württemberg, for areas at the Burgholzhof . A new large stadium was to be built on the site, which also served as a parade ground. The connection to the new sports facility turned out to be a problem, because neither the train station in Cannstatt nor that in Untertürkheim were close enough for the incoming visitors.

Karl Schaechterle from the Reichsbahndirektion Stuttgart planned a new station for special trains on the Eastern Railway , the Wasen station . In addition to platforms on the suburban tracks of the Eastern Railway, a platform was also to be built on the long-distance tracks. A lower platform would have been available for the trains from Kornwestheim running on the Schusterbahn . In order to direct the trains coming from Waiblingen to him, they would have had to branch off at the Remsbahn curve to the Untertürkheim freight yard. Another, higher platform was intended for shuttle traffic to Stuttgart Central Station . Schaechterle could not realize his extensive vision, however, the Reichsbahn refused.

In the 1960s , the Federal Railroad revived the plans for a Neckarstadion station . Since this would have been on the long-distance tracks of the Filstalbahn and the considerations for an S-Bahn in Stuttgart had already begun, the idea was not implemented: the S-Bahn line S1 has been running between Schwabstraße and Plochingen since 1978 , so now a new one S-Bahn station near the stadium could be planned. In investigations carried out in 1979 the traffic planners came to a positive result. The Neckar Stadium stop on Alte Untertürkheimer Strasse was finally inaugurated on September 29, 1984.

In addition to the Neckar Stadium that gave it its name, the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle and the Daimler-Benz plant in Untertürkheim were also located in its vicinity. After the Neckar Stadium was given a new name, the previous station name was no longer applicable. From then on, the S-Bahn stopped at the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium .

Since July 2005, the station has had an additional track and a lift for the numerous visitors to major events. With the opening of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in May 2006, the stop became even more important. A sign reading “Mercedes-Benz Museum” was placed above the station sign. In 2008 the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium was renamed the Mercedes-Benz Arena . In order to not only refer to the stadium in future, but to the entire event site, the decision was made to use the current station name. To distinguish it from the “NeckarPark (Stadion)” tram stop , the name Neckarpark (Mercedes-Benz) was created . The advertising contract with Mercedes-Benz expired on August 1, 2014 and was not extended, which is why the station is now called “Stuttgart Neckarpark” again.

Since the 2016/2017 second division season , the previous S1 line, which ends here from Herrenberg, has been running at home games of VfB Stuttgart in the Mercedes-Benz Arena , differently as S11 (previously these were run as S1).

Rail operations

The station is served by the S1 and S11 lines of the Stuttgart S-Bahn. Track 1 is assigned to the S-Bahn towards Bad Cannstatt, Track 2 to the S-Bahn towards Esslingen . Track 3 is only used unscheduled.

According to Deutsche Bahn AG, the Stuttgart Neckarpark station corresponds to station category 4.
