The station Waiblingen is a Keilbahnhof at the intersection of Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt-Aalen railway ( "Rems Railway") and the Waiblingen-Schwäbisch Hall railway ( "Murr train").

history

First station building

A station building was erected as early as 1861 when the Remsbahn was built in Waiblingen . This building still exists. It is located approx. 400 m east of today's train station and serves as a residential building . The building was retained when the area was rebuilt in 2013. Directly to the east of it was a level crossing over the Remsbahn in the course of Mayenner Strasse . This was replaced by an underpass at the end of the 1960s.

With the construction of the Murrbahn in 1876, the station had to be completely rebuilt. It was designed further to the west as a wedge station , as the routes already divide in front of the station building. The station building was located slightly to the east of the current facilities, had two floors and the architectural style corresponded to the station building in Winnenden . It was connected to Bahnhofstrasse via a cul-de-sac and was demolished in 1979 in preparation for the expansion of the S-Bahn .

Third station building

The current station building, which was built on the site of its predecessor, was opened in 1980. The background was the commissioning of the S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 in 1981. Direct access from the reception building to the tracks was given up and replaced by a bus bypass with stops for city and regional bus traffic. The planum of the station forecourt was also lowered. A large park-and-ride area was created here. In addition to the reception buildings in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen from 1982 and Ludwigsburg from 1992, this is one of the few new station buildings to replace old structures after the reconstruction in Württemberg .

The last major modernization took place in early 2008 when the old kiosk and restaurant facilities from 1980 were replaced by a modern kiosk and bakery .

In the 1990s , the part of the station leading towards Schorndorf was rebuilt. Before the renovation, track 5 was primarily intended for traffic to Stuttgart , track 6 for traffic to Schorndorf and track 7 for both directions; the renovation changed that track 7 was intended for traffic in the direction of Schorndorf, so that track 6 in between can be used operationally as a passing track in both directions. The measure was part of a more than 50 million euro package to enable a 15-minute cycle in the morning rush hour of the Stuttgart S-Bahn.

In 2009 the station was converted to make it accessible for the disabled.

During work on the signal box in Waiblingen problems arose on November 18, 2019, as a result of which train traffic between Waiblingen and Schorndorf was largely suspended until the morning of November 21, 2019.

This numbering of the tracks was only introduced shortly before the S-Bahn was expanded. Before that, the Murrbahn tracks were designated 1M – 3M, and the Remsbahn tracks 1R – 3R, with the counting from the station building to the outside. Track 4 was referred to as track 1A.

South of the Remsbahn tracks there is a substation on the railway's own premises , which was built for the operation of the S-Bahn. It consists of two transformers with 15 MVA each and a connection option for a mobile substation . The substation is fed by a 110 kV stub line branching off from the Stuttgart– Plochingen high -voltage railway line in Fellbach . Due to the narrow area, it was the first substation in Germany in which the 110 kV switchgear was not installed outdoors but in a building and switches with sulfur hexafluoride were installed as insulators.

At the western end of the platform on track 1 is the signal box which is responsible for train traffic around Waiblingen

Part of the relay interlocking is to be incorporated into a digital interlocking in Stuttgart by 2025 .

From the end of May to October 22, 2018, due to construction work on the Karlsruhe-Stuttgart railway line in Waiblingen, ICE trains also stopped at night, namely ICEs 618 and 619. The train was turned around in Waiblingen station, which was otherwise done in Karlsruhe becomes.
