Railway stations in Baden-Württemberg |
The Schorndorf station is located on the 1861 opened Rems Railway Stuttgart-Aalen (kilometer 26.4). It is listed under the name TSF in the operating point directory and is used by around 10,000 travelers every day.
location
The train station is located directly on the northern edge of the historic old town of Schorndorf . It is right in the center. To the east of the train station is the central bus station (ZOB), further to the west is the former freight station. Directly on the northern side of the underpass is the vocational school center and the Schorndorf train station bus stop (Grabenstrasse) (which can also be reached with a lift ) . The suburb is also to the north.
Construction of the station
The station consists of a reception building built in 1863 in the neo-renaissance style and some extensions or new buildings.
It has six tracks, namely tracks 1–5 and track 14 in the south of the station. Tracks 1–3, track 5 and track 14 are used regularly.
Track 5 is used exclusively for traffic on the Wieslauftalbahn . After dismantling the eastern turnouts, it is only connected to the Remsbahn on the western side of the station.
After the operator switched to Go-Ahead, track 4 is used exclusively for overhauls, trains turning earlier and as a siding for S-Bahn trains.
All platforms are barrier-free accessible via ramps or elevators .
In the course of the federal economic stimulus programs, the reception building was energetically renovated between 2009 and 2010. Furthermore, it was externally adapted to its original condition from a historical preservation point of view. In addition, the platform roof on the extended house platform was also renovated.
history
After the Filstalbahn opened in 1850 , construction of the Remsbahn began in 1858. For the Schorndorf area, it was originally planned in 1845 to build the route south of the city. The municipal council and the citizens' committee decided against this solution in 1858. At the beginning of 1860 the railway construction section reached Schorndorf.
The railway construction in times of great misery also saved many people in Schorndorf from hunger or emigration. The station was built between what was then the city center, today's old town, and the suburb. Approval runs of the Remsbahn section from Cannstatt to Schorndorf with celebrations at the station took place on June 23, 1861. The station was opened on July 18, 1861. A week later, on July 25, 1861, the line from Bad Cannstatt to Wasseralfingen went into operation and the scheduled operation began.
On October 3, 1863, the line from Wasseralfingen to Nördlingen was opened.
In the years 1873 and 1874 there were also plans for a connection from Schorndorf to Plochingen, but this project was rejected again. Other plans included a route from Schorndorf to Ludwigsburg , but this idea was not implemented either.
In 1908 the Wieslauftalbahn opened and the Schorndorfer train station became a hub.
In 1962, on the occasion of the electrification, the station received a new signal box with the designation Sf (Schorndorf, dispatcher) while at the same time integrating it into the Stuttgart suburban traffic . It was the track plan push button interlocking of the type 59 from Siemens (Sp Dr S59), which was taken out of service on July 1, 2001. Since then, Schorndorf has been remotely controlled from the electronic signal box in Waiblingen. The Schorndorf signal box was included in their program by the model maker Faller under the kit designation B 125 as an HO model.
outlook
Additional parking spaces for S-Bahn trains are to be created in Schorndorf. The Stuttgart Region Association decided on April 22, 2020 to commission a corresponding planning ( service phases 1 to 4).
traffic
The station is assigned to station category 3 of Deutsche Bahn . The permissible speed for train journeys in the station area is between 40 and 130 km / h.
Long-distance transport
In the early morning and late evening, a pair of intercity trains on route 61 Karlsruhe - Nuremberg stops in Schorndorf. It bears the name Saale Valley and runs to and from Leipzig beyond the eastern end point .

In addition, the Interregio-Express trains (IRE1) from Karlsruhe to Aalen stop every two hours. Schorndorf station is the end of line S2 (Schorndorf – Stuttgart– Airport - Filderstadt ) of the Stuttgart S-Bahn . The entry and exit of the S-Bahn are largely carried out at 40 km / h, with some tracks in the opposite direction being crossed.

Freight transport
To the west of the train station is the siding for the logistics center of the home appliance manufacturer Bauknecht, which is part of the Whirlpool Group . He receives 20% of his incoming goods via rail.
There used to be an extensive industrial track network in Schorndorf, which extended over the Hammerschlag industrial area, Vorstadtstraße and part of Remsstraße. The Bauknecht production plant was also connected to rail traffic until around 2000.
Service in the train station
The station has a travel center , a bakery and a kiosk in the reception building . In the neighboring former express goods building there is now a book and magazine shop as well as an internet café.
