The station Ellwangen is the station of Ellwangen (Jagst) . It is located on the Goldshöfe – Crailsheim (Obere Jagstbahn) railway line and is the largest and most important train station between Goldshöfe and Crailsheim .
history
Together with the completion of the Upper Jagstbahn in 1866, the Ellwangen train station was opened a few hundred meters north of the historic city center. As early as around 1870, negotiations were continued on the construction of a rail connection from Ellwangen to Dinkelsbühl in the direction of Nuremberg . However, the plans were abandoned a few years later, as the route via Crailsheim and Ansbach turned out to be significantly shorter and more advantageous. Thus, the Ellwangen train station remained a pure through station on the single-track line. At the beginning of the 20th century there were renewed efforts to run a local railway line from Ellwangen into the eastern hinterland via Röhlingen and Pfahlheim to Tannhausen . However, these plans to build this route were quickly rejected.
In 1939 the line of the Upper Jagstbahn was to be expanded to double tracks, which would also have meant reconstruction in the area of the town of Ellwangen. This measure could not be started because of the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1985 the Obere Jagstbahn was electrified ; electrical operation began on June 2, 1985, together with the timetable change . In the mid-1990s, the station forecourt was extensively modernized and a new central bus station with 13 stops and a P + R car park went into operation. The old, dilapidated goods shed north of the reception building had to be demolished for this purpose. In September 2003, all freight and shunting tracks as well as all remaining sidings were dismantled by Deutsche Bahn within one night. Since then, no freight wagons can be handled in Ellwangen.
From September 2010 to the beginning of April 2011, the platforms in Ellwangen were renovated. The platform on track 1 was raised to a height of 55 centimeters, the lighting was replaced and a dynamic text indicator was installed.
Structural systems and connections

In the reception building there is a ServicePoint of FahrBus Ostalb GmbH, where not only bus tickets but also DB tickets can be purchased. In addition, there is a newspaper shop and a bakery branch in the station building, as well as the office of the local dispatcher with a Sp Dr S600 track plan interlocking. Immediately next to the train station is a central bus station, from which the regional bus routes to the surrounding area of Ellwangen and the urban transport routes of the city of Ellwangen start. A toilet building as well as the old loading ramp for goods handling are also available north of the reception building , which is now used as a parking space for buses. At the level of the northern exit signals there is also an old signal box that serves as a studio for a local artist.
