Aalen Hauptbahnhof is a train station around 200 meters northeast of the old town of Aalen . In its function as a hub station , it is the crossing point of the Remsbahn from Stuttgart , the Brenzbahn from Ulm , the Upper Jagstbahn to Crailsheim and the Riesbahn to Donauwörth .

Since the timetable change on December 11, 2016, Aalen station has been known as the main station .

Despite the difficulties of the states of Württemberg and Bavaria , which could not agree on a common concept of a cross-border railway, the Remsbahn of the Royal Württemberg State Railways was the first to reach the place on July 18, 1861 . Although Aalen was not planned as a railway junction, the first small station was manned by eight railway employees, who were also post office workers. An extension of the line in the direction of Nördlingen then started operations on October 3, 1863. The third connection was the Brenzbahn from Heidenheim on September 13, 1864 (the connection from Heidenheim to Ulm could only be completed in 1876 due to the so-called Brenzbahn clause ). Crailsheim could then be reached by train from November 15, 1866 and Schwäbisch Hall from December 10, 1867. In 1865 a railway repair shop was set up, which was the basis for the later Aalen depot .

At this point it was already becoming apparent that the station was designed too small for the increasing rail traffic. It only had a covered main platform directly at the station building and an auxiliary platform only around 1.80 m wide for the second track. So in 1873 the expansion and renovation of the station began. In 1876 the new main building was inaugurated. In 1884 the station had a total of four tracks, three of which were intended for passenger traffic. Despite the meager financial resources the state made available (only 500,000 gold marks instead of the 3,500,000 required), the station was equipped for the further increase in traffic. By the end of the century, traffic rose to a total of 80 train journeys per day.

In 1901 the funds were used up, but the country provided a further 1,400,000 gold marks. This enabled the station to be expanded from three to five tracks for passenger traffic. On October 31 of the same year, the Härtsfeldbahn, a 1000 mm narrow-gauge railway to Neresheim and Dillingen, went into operation. It had its end point opposite the train station on the other side of the tracks. To connect them to the station building, a 72 m long tunnel was built under the railway systems. Since the railway initially ran parallel to the line in the direction of Ulm, this section lay on a three- rail track .

In 1905 the station got electromechanical signal box technology .

During the Second World War , the station was not badly damaged in a first wave of attacks on April 1 and 2, 1945. It was not until the targeted attacks on April 8 and April 17 that the train station was permanently damaged, so that traffic had to be stopped entirely. Traffic could not be resumed until July 9th at the instigation of the Allies .

The next drastic change took place in 1970 with the start of electrification of the Remsbahn, which was completed on May 28, 1972. This measure was already resolved with the signing of the electrification agreement between the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Deutsche Bundesbahn . A relay interlocking has existed since 1971 . The section to Crailsheim was only electrified until June 2, 1985.

The Härtsfeldbahn stopped its passenger service on September 30, 1972. Freight traffic followed two months later on November 30th. The track system was then dismantled.

A renovation of the main building, which was planned for 1980, was postponed to 1990. The reason was that the building was now a listed building . The travel center, a shop and a bistro were also built for 4.4 million German marks .

In 1991 a two-hour interregional line was set up between Karlsruhe and Nuremberg via Aalen. This line has been operating as an intercity line since 2002 . Individual trains drove or go beyond Nuremberg to various other destinations.

Reception building during renovation (2016)

In January 2010 it was announced that Aalen train station was to be modernized and equipped for disabled people with funds from the Federal Republic's Economic Stimulus Package I for a total of around 4.8 million euros. On August 3, 2012, the installation of the elevators and the establishment of entrances to the Hirschbach underpass (investment of around 2.2 million euros) were completed. In 2014 the retail space was renovated again, with the sales areas of the station bookstore and the bakery café being modernized and expanded.

The second expansion stage began with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on June 26, 2015. Platforms 1, 2/3 and 4/5 with a height of 55 centimeters were rebuilt for 4.9 million euros, which are borne by the federal, state, rail and city authorities . Likewise, the station as a whole is to be modernized. The conversion will take place in a five-stage phase during ongoing operations and should be completed by the end of 2016.

When the construction work was completed, the station was renamed Aalen Hauptbahnhof on December 11, 2016 .

In the integral cycle timetable of Baden-Württemberg, the station has two types of node functions:

Every hour at the symmetry minute 30 there are transfer options between regional trains for the following routes in the outward and return direction:

  • Stuttgart – Aalen – Ellwangen (- Crailsheim) ( Remsbahn and Obere Jagstbahn , to Crailsheim only every two hours),
  • Ulm – Aalen ( Brenzbahn ),
  • Aalen – Donauwörth (- Munich) ( Riesbahn , on weekends only every two hours continuously).

You can change between the directions Ellwangen and Donauwörth in the neighboring Goldshöfe train station .

At every odd hour around the symmetry minute 00 there are transfer options between Intercity trains on the Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – Nuremberg – Munich line in both directions and Interregio Express trains to and from Ulm.

With the timetable change on June 9, 2019, Go-Ahead Baden-Württemberg GmbH took over the operation of regional traffic on the Rems and Oberen Jagstbahn. In the course of this, the main frequency between Stuttgart and Aalen was extended to half an hour from Monday to Saturday. In addition, there is a two-hour change-free connection between Aalen and Karlsruhe with the InterCity 61. On the same date, the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn took over the operation of the regional express between Ulm and Aalen. The two-hour Interregio-Express from Aalen to Ulm operated by DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee will remain unchanged.

Aalen municipal industrial railway

In the south of the urban area was the municipal industrial railway in Aalen , which was closed in autumn 2016 and on which around 250 wagonloads were still transported annually in 2002. It began at the station exit in the direction of Ulm.

Connection

A bus station in front of the main building and a park-and-ride car park opened in 2006 connect the station with road traffic. The information center of the Aalen transport association is located at the bus station .

In 2003, a bicycle parking garage with 204 parking spaces was inaugurated and equipped with video surveillance to protect against theft.

Further train stations in the city of Aalen

In addition to the Aalen train station, there are other stations in the city area, but for historical reasons they do not have the name “Aalen” in their names. These stations are the Wasseralfingen , Unterkochen and Hofen train stations . The Goldshöfe train station is located partly in the urban area of Aalen and partly in the municipal area of Rainau . In the south of the city is the disused stop Erlau.

With the introduction of the half-hourly service, the Aalen West stop on the Remsbahn is due to go into operation in 2019. This is to be built between the Hofherrnweiler district and the West industrial area at the level of the city nursery, a length of 270 meters and, like the main train station, a platform height of 55 centimeters. In addition, there are medium-term plans to set up the Aalen Süd stop on the Brenzbahn between Walkstraße and the former Erlau stop.
