Railway stations in Bavaria |
The Donauwörth station is the train station of about 20,000 people town of Donauwörth . This is where the Augsburg – Nördlingen and Ingolstadt – Neuoffingen lines intersect . In addition, the railway line to Treuchtlingen begins in Donauwörth .
Today the station is in the southwest of the city. In addition to the Donauwörth station, there is also the smaller Wörnitzstein station in the city , which is located on the Riesbahn.
history
In 1847 a train drove into Donauwörth for the first time. The place was on the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn in the section Augsburg-Donauwörth-Nördlingen-Gunzenhausen-Pleinfeld-Nuremberg. The trains stopped in today's promenade in front of the railway tunnel. With the construction of the Danube port in the years 1853-1854, a station building was also built. In 1861 this station was given a siding for Danube steam navigation in the area of today's Zirgesheimer Straße. The historical route through the promenade essentially corresponds to today's footpath and bike path in this area. The station was in front of the former, 161-meter-long railway tunnel, which now passes under the Protestant church and a parking lot. The tunnel is now only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. During the Second World War it was used to manufacture war ammunition.
In 1877 the railway line from Neuoffingen to Regensburg was opened, which crossed in Donauwörth with the existing Augsburg – Nuremberg line. That is why the current station in Donauwörth was built in the southwest of the city between 1874 and 1877 and opened on November 15, 1877.
On October 1, 1906, the rail gap between Donauwörth and Treuchtlingen was finally closed. This completed the Donauwörth railway lines. The railway connection to Nuremberg was thereby considerably shorter. The old route to Nuremberg in the direction of Nördlingen is now often assigned to the Riesbahn in the direction of Aalen – Stuttgart.
During the Second World War, the Donauwörth station building was destroyed by air raids on April 11 and 19, 1945, and the railway facilities were damaged. The reconstruction took place between 1948 and 1953.
To control the track systems in and around the Donauwörth station, a new Sp Dr S 60 pushbutton interlocking was put into operation on July 5, 1970 , with both local control points at the northern and southern ends of the station.
In 2001 the station forecourt was redesigned with the bus station.
In the north-eastern part of the station area there is a local freight facility, which has not been operated since 2001. In 2003 the general cargo hall in this area was demolished and replaced by a car park for rail travelers.
To the west of the passenger station is a marshalling yard, which was used by numerous freight trains on north-south traffic until the mid-1990s. With the implementation of the MORA-C program, shunting operations were discontinued on January 1, 2002. For several years now, the shunting tracks have served as a hub in the Mittelweserbahn's international freight transport network, which was launched in 2003 .

traffic
Long-distance transport
In the 1939 summer timetable, 18 long-distance trains per day ran regularly via Donauwörth.
In the 1980s, the wing train of the TEE Rheingold stopped here .
Currently, the Donauwörth train station is served by Intercity Express and Intercity trains several times a day . At the weekend, a pair of ICE trains runs from Hamburg-Altona to Schwarzach-St. Vitus
When the timetable changed in December 2017, Donauwörth became an ICE system stop: all ICE trains passing through the station every day also stop there. The commissioning of the Ebensfeld – Leipzig high-speed line shortened the travel time to Berlin by around one and a half hours. The trains between Berlin and Munich run at a time that offers connections to and from regional traffic, so that Donauwörth has become an important long-distance train station for the region as well.

Regional traffic
In Donauwörth the regional railway lines of the Riesbahn to Aalen , the Danube Valley Railway from Ulm to Regensburg and the railway line from Augsburg to Nuremberg cross .
Since some ICE connections were no longer available due to the commissioning of the high-speed line from Munich to Nuremberg via Ingolstadt, a regional express service was created that enables a continuous connection to Nuremberg. In the opposite direction, this Allgäu-Franken-Express enables a continuous rail connection to Lindau and Oberstdorf .
With the timetable change on December 13, 2009, the long-planned service of the Fugger Express was started. This means that almost all regional trains in the direction of Augsburg continue to Munich .

The bus station, which was redesigned in 2001, is located in the eastern area of the station forecourt. It was designed to provide information about the traffic history of the city of Donauwörth, this is supported by lettering and information boards on the bus platforms.
Numerous lines of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Donau-Ries begin or end at the bus station . The bus stop is also one of two hubs in the Donauwörth city bus network.
Lines 1 and 2 are served by solo buses, the remaining lines mainly by minibuses. However, here too, large buses are used in the morning, in the evening and sometimes for repeater trips in the afternoon.
The new line 4, which runs to Oberndorf am Lech , and line 5 to Bissingen (Swabia) have been on the road since July 1, 2016 . In addition, the evening timetable will be improved. The Stadtbus Donauwörth has been using lines 1–6 in city bus traffic since 2019 . The Donauwörth city bus is operated by the city of Donauwörth and operated by the Deutsche Bahn bus fleet.
Facilities
The station houses a Deutsche Bahn travel center , a service store, a station bookshop and a waiting hall. There is a car park for rail customers and a bicycle parking facility next to the train station. An outbuilding of the station, in which the toilet facilities were located, was badly damaged by fire in August 2008.
A new building planned for 2009 was not implemented, instead the city of Donauwörth has been operating a new toilet container at the train station since 2010.
future
In February 2014, Deutsche Bahn announced that it would extensively renovate Donauwörth station. In the next few years, all platforms and their roof structures are to be replaced, elevators installed and the underpass under the platforms expanded. An investment volume of 15 million euros is planned for this.
Another project, the realization of which has not yet been clarified, is the extension of the underpass to Industriestrasse. This would mean that the Airbus Helicopters company and the industrial areas in the Riedlingen district could be reached on foot in a shorter way than before. To promote these projects, an alliance was formed in Donauwörth in February 2011 to improve the connection and the condition of the Donauwörth train station.
The city of Donauwörth is currently planning a new business and residential area with a shopping center in the immediate vicinity of the train station. In the course of these construction measures, the parking garage at the train station is also to be expanded by 180 parking spaces to the east and west. The future toilet facility of the station will also be housed in this building. The bicycle parking facility is to be concentrated on the east side of the station building in future.
In the fall of 2015, Ulrich Lange, a member of the Bundestag, proposed an intercity line from Stuttgart via Donauwörth to Ingolstadt . This is intended to improve the east-west connections for the Ostalbkreis, the Donau-Ries district and Ingolstadt; the Intercity 2 is to be used as vehicle material. Lange held discussions about this with Deutsche Bahn and, according to him, met with a positive response. The Donau-Ries district has decided to commission a study on the profitability of the line.
In April 2017 it was announced that Donauwörth will be upgraded to an ICE system stop with the timetable change in December 2017. In addition, a new underpass should be built by 2021 after the renovation and barrier-free access should be possible.
Work on the conversion began in mid-April 2020. The planned end is 2023, also due to a one-year break in construction. The breakthrough to Airbus Helicopters is still being planned.
The Donauwörth area is to be equipped with digital interlockings and ETCS by 2030 as part of the “starter package” of the Digital Rail Germany , as part of the TEN core network corridor Scandinavia-Mediterranean .
