history

Alemannic row grave finds indicate an early settlement of the place. Bissingen was first mentioned in a document around 1140 in a deed of donation for the Berchtesgaden Canons . The place was first referred to as a market as early as 1281 . Bissingen was part and later also the seat of the Hohenburg-Bissingen lordship , which had come into the possession of the Counts of Oettingen along with large parts of the Kesseltal before 1281 . Since 1327 the place and the rule had changing owners. One of them, the mercenary leader Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach , had today's Bissingen Castle built in 1558/59 .

In 1661 the market Bissingen and the rule that was now called Hohenburg-Bissingen fell back to the Principality of Oettingen-Wallerstein . Bissingen became the seat of an upper bailiff's office. With the Rheinbund act 1806 the place came to Bavaria . In 1818, as part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, a princely ruling court was set up, which was dissolved or converted into a regional court in the revolutionary years of 1848/49. This was moved to Höchstädt in 1862.

19th and 20th centuries

The parish church in Bissingen was rebuilt between 1858 and 1860 on the walls of the old church built in 1682. The 45 m high onion dome was preserved and is a landmark of Bissingen.

In 1906 the pharmacist Max Premauer discovered a healing spring in Bissingen, the so-called Bissinger Auerquelle. This also led to the emergence of several spa houses in Bissingen.
