Syrgenstein is a municipality in the district of Dillingen on the Danube in Bavaria and the seat of the Syrgenstein administrative community .
geography
location
The community is located in the northwest of Bavarian Swabia on the border with Baden-Württemberg . The highest point in the district of Dillingen is in the district of Staufen . The next larger city is Giengen an der Brenz, about six kilometers away .

history
Until the founding of the forerunner churches
The imperial barons of Syrgenstein shared sovereignty and the high court in the Syrgenstein rule with the Duchy of Neuburg since 1693 . Staufen, which is part of the municipality today, formed a closed Hofmark of the Lords of Westerstetten and later of the Counts of Türheim. In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria , the municipal edict of 1818 created the municipalities of Altenberg and Ballhausen.
Incorporations
In view of the upcoming municipal reform , the municipalities of Altenberg and Ballhausen (557 inhabitants on May 27, 1970) merged to form the new municipality of Altenberg on July 1, 1970. This was renamed Syrgenstein on February 1, 1971. Landshausen (739 inhabitants) was added on May 1, 1978, Staufen (691 inhabitants) followed on January 1, 1980.

mayor
Mirjam Steiner (SPD) has been mayor since May 1, 2020; it prevailed in the runoff election on March 29, 2020 against Ralf Kindelmann ( CSU ) with 58.0% of the vote. In the first ballot she had achieved 47.0% out of three applicants. Her predecessor was Bernd Steiner (SPD / Independent Citizens) from May 1984 to April 2020. Steiner (* 1953) was head of the community for a total of 36 years and did not stand for election on March 15, 2020.

- Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Evangelist in Altenberg , consecrated in 1765
- Altenberg Castle : 1361–1637 in the possession of the Lords of Westerstetten , then of the Lords of Syrgenstein (also known as Sürgen ), who were ministers of the St. Gallen Monastery in Allgäu and had their ancestral seat at Syrgenstein Castle . They built today's castle around 1693. 1798 sold to the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein . Acquired in 1982 by the Free State of Bavaria, which sold it to Princess Clothilde von Liechtenstein in 1986 .

Economy including agriculture and forestry
In 1998, according to the official statistics, there were no employees at the place of work in the manufacturing industry or in trade and transport who were subject to social security contributions. In other economic sectors, 69 people were employed at the place of work subject to social security contributions. In the manufacturing sector there were none, the main construction of six plants. In addition, in 1999 there were 25 agricultural holdings with an agriculturally used area of 465 ha, of which 292 ha were arable land and 173 ha were permanent green space .
