history

The old church, consecrated to St. Martin of Tours , probably belonged to a Frankish imperial estate . The Reformation was introduced under Count Palatine Ottheinrich in 1552 and Staufen remained Protestant until 1616. After the re-Catholicization , the parish was also looked after by the pastor of Zöschingen until 1655 . In 1879 the church tower had to be demolished because it was dilapidated and in 1892 the church was demolished. In 1892/93, the present-day church was built in neo -Gothic style according to the plans of the builder Steiff from Giengen .

During the construction work one discovered a Romanesque leaf chalice capital , the base stone of a Corinthian column base , remains of a Gothic altar, parts of a wall painting and a pointed arch with the year 1618. The old church was probably extended or renewed in that year.

architecture

In the northern corner of the choir rises the tower, which is covered with a pointed helmet . The penultimate floor is broken up by ogival sound arcades . On the top floor, circular glare fields alternate with round windows.

The nave has a single nave . A pointed arched choir arch opens to the recessed, polygonal choir , which, like the nave, is covered by a neo-Gothic cross - ribbed vault. The western end is formed by a gallery resting on four wooden posts with a wood-carved parapet .

In the western vestibule of the church there are epitaphs with the coats of arms of the von Westerstetten and von Syrgenstein families.
