The Kessel is an almost 41 kilometer long river running approximately eastwards in the Bavarian districts of Donau-Ries and in between Dillingen on the Danube on the Riesalb and later in the Danube Valley, which flows into the Danube from the left at Donauwörth .

The Kessel rises on Hungerberg near Aufhausen in the municipality of Forheim and initially flows in an east-southeast direction. From the Bissingen town of Diemantstein , it flows in narrow valley meanders to the northeast past the Sonnenberg and Judenberg to the Mönchsdegginger town of Untermagerbein , where it turns to the southeast and first reaches Bissingen itself on an almost straight valley line , then in just a gently winding Danube Munster on the left bank of the Danube. From here it flows along the Danube to the east-northeast. Finally it flows into the Danube at Donauwörth .
On its way to the mouth, the kettle mostly flows through agricultural areas, but also crosses some villages such as Amerdingen , Bissingen , Donaumünster and Erlingshofen . The Kesseltal is particularly scenic on its meandering section between Thalheim and Untermagerbein.
Catchment area
The boiler drains an area of 174.6 km² approximately east-southeast to the Danube . The catchment area is located in the upper part of the sub-area Kesselbachmulde, named after her, of the Riesalb natural area , in the lower part it is predominantly in the adjacent sub-area Liezheimer Alb . Only shortly before it reaches the Danube dam near Donaumünster does it enter the Donauried natural area , in a narrow marginal strip from which it flows from there to the mouth in Donauwörth next to the Danube. The highest point in the catchment area is on the northern edge on an apparently nameless elevation with a water reservoir north of Bollstadt , where 615 m above sea level. NHN can be reached.
Adjacent catchment areas are in turn in the north the sub-catchment area of the Eger , which drains to the Wörnitz , in the east the sub-catchment area of the Wörnitz, which lies below its mouth and flows into the Danube a little below the basin. Behind the lower southern watershed, in addition to initially the Danube itself and then smaller bodies of water, the Danube tributaries Klosterbach and Egau with their tributaries drain the area. The upper Egau also competes beyond the western watershed.
The catchment area is predominantly in Bavaria , on the upper reaches in the communities Forheim and Amerdingen in the Donau-Ries district ; Between the two, an area of the community of Dischingen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Heidenheim extends to the right bank. The middle course and the central catchment area then belong almost entirely to the Bissingen market in the north of the Bavarian district of Dillingen an der Donau , with the exception of the area around the extreme north curve of the river at Untermagerbein , which belongs to Mönchsdeggingen in the Donau-Ries district. Further down after the main town of Markt Bissingen, the catchment area of the Unterlauf divides into a larger part of the municipality of Tapfheim and a smaller part of the city of Donauwörth , both again in the district of Donau-Ries.

Source Kessel origin of the kettle at about 560 m above sea level. NHN in the Hungerberg forest slope about 2.0 km southwest of the center of the parish village Aufhausen in the municipality of Forheim in the Donau-Ries district . The water initially flows east-southeast.
- (Inflow), from the left and northwest to 514 m above sea level. NHN on the community border to Amerdingen opposite Seelbronn, approx. 1.7 km and approx. 1.6 km². Arises at about 546 m above sea level. NHN a little west of Aufhausen in the Gewann Hörnle between fields and meadows.
From this inflow, the boiler moves approximately to the east. - Sonderbach , from the right and west to about 491 m above sea level. NHN at the lower edge of Amerdingen, approx. 2.4 km and approx. 3.2 km². Arises at about 528 m above sea level. NHN just across the border at the Baumgries homestead in Dischingen in the Heidenheim district of Baden-Württemberg .
- Bauernbach , on the upper course of Mühlbach , from the right and west-southwest to about 486 m above sea level. NHN shortly before the municipal boundary to Markt Bissingen , approx. 6.3 km and approx. 9.2 km². Arises at about 559 m above sea level. NHN south of Eglingen near the K 3001 at Eglinger Keller.
- Sternbach , with a longer left upper reaches Kesselbach and above Aufhauser Bach, from the left and west-north-west to about 480 m above sea level. NHN opposite Zoltingen , approx. 4.7 km and approx. 7.6 km². Arises at about 530 m above sea level. NHN at the Aufhausen sewage treatment plant.
- Köhrlesbach , from the right and southwest to about 478 m above sea level. NHN on the upper edge of Unterringingen , approx. 5.4 km and approx. 6.6 km². Arises at about 541 m above sea level. NHN a little northeast under the three stones at the edge of the clearing.

Fohlenbach , from the left and northwest to about 476 m above sea level. NHN in Unterringingen, approx. 3.9 km and approx. 6.9 km². Arises at about 532 m above sea level. NHN a little south of Amerdingen- Bollstadt on the district road DON 7 to Amerdingen.
After the next village of Diemantstein, the Kessel runs through initially north-easterly course in Talschlingen, then on a straight south-east the landscape protection area Oberes Kesseltal to the village of Göllingen von Markt Bissingen. In the northern area of the large left-hand bend formed from this change of direction, it runs a short distance in the municipality of Mönchsdeggingen again in the Donau-Ries district. - (Outflow of the prelate pond ), from the left and west-northwest to about 446 m above sea level. NHN in the Kirchdorf Untermagerbein of Mönchsdeggingen, approx. 2.2 km and approx. 3.3 km². The approx. 0.8 ha large
prelate pond is located at about 495 m above sea level. NHN in the forest west of Untermagerbein, it takes in some less than 0.4 km long slope tributaries. - Renngraben , from the left and northeast to about 441 m above sea level. NHN at the end of Untermagerbein, approx. 2.2 km and approx. 2.3 km². Arises at about 543 m above sea level. NHN in Lachholz .
- Wildbach , from the right and southwest to about 428 m above sea level. NHN at the Neutenmühle in Bissingen, approx. 4.1 km and approx. 6.9 km². Arises at about 533 m above sea level. NHN northeast of Oberliezheim in the forest.
- Sinnenbach , from the right and southwest to about 423 m above sea level. NHN between Bissingen and Unterbissingen , approx. 3.5 km and approx. 3.6 km². Arises at about 538 m above sea level. NHN east of Oberliezheim .
- Bayerbach , from the right and south-southwest to about 421 m above sea level. NHN over an floodplain after crossing Unterbissingen, approx. 1.4 km and approx. 1.5 km². Arises at about 474 m above sea level. NHN at the edge of the forest in the south of Unterbissingen.

Reichenbach , from the right and west to about 402 m above sea level. NHN on the left Danube dam in Donaumünster , 10.5 km and 34.1 km². Arises at about 532 m above sea level. NHN about 2.0 km west-northwest of the Dettenhart homestead in the Schwenningen community in the forest.
From this inflow, the Kessel runs a short distance to the left of the Danube, parallel to the east-northeast and drains two old Danube loops with adjoining old quarry ponds, including the Riedlinger lakes, which are used as bathing lakes, in the Donauwörther district.
Mouth of the kettle from the left and after a total of approximately east-south-east run below the Danube barrier Donauwörth and the Danube bridge of the B 16 at about 398 m above sea level. NHN at the airfield on the southern edge of Donauwörth in the Danube . The boiler is 40.9 km long and has a catchment area of 174.6 km².
Old course
Until the correction of the Danube, which previously ran in very wide loops through the Donauried, the basin flowed into it after a short run about five kilometers just below Tapfheim- Erlingshofen . The newer sections of the lower reaches first follow an old loop of the Danube and then a completely new route close to the straightened Danube. There is a flood dam usually at least on one side along the basin.
Water pollution 2006
On July 14, 2006, about 100 cubic meters of manure spilled into the river. The reason was a biogas plant in Eglingen ( Dischingen ) that was not being used properly. Many fish died and the water was contaminated at least as far as Thalheim.
