history

In 1929 Heinrich Gropper took over a cheese dairy and restaurant in Berg near Donauwörth and founded the Gropper dairy there. There, 600 liters of milk were processed into butter and cheese every day. In 1953 Heinrich Gropper senior, son of the company founder, joined the company, which had already grown strongly. He became sole managing director in 1960.

In 1973 the company moved to nearby Bissingen. The dairy that was acquired there was continuously expanded in the years that followed and the development of new products and packaging was promoted.

In 1987 the company was the first dairy in Germany to introduce a fully automatic filling system for returnable bottles. Up to 60,000 liters of milk were now processed every day. The dairy thus achieved its breakthrough on the milk market as a specialist in retail. In 2007, the filling in returnable bottles was stopped due to the changed market situation.

In 1993 the family business - now under the management of Heinrich Gropper jun. - the license for the use of the brand name “Käfer” from the Munich delicatessen of the same name . Since then, Gropper has been active nationally.

The expansion of the range made it necessary to expand the company in 1996. Gropper decided to build a new building on the outskirts of Bissingen. This is how today's company headquarters came about. A year later, Gropper acquired the traditional Munich brand Deller and thus increased its sales figures in the Munich area .

In 2003, Heinrich Gropper Jr.'s management decided to strengthen the Gropper brand, and at the same time the Deller brand was discontinued.

The following year, the dairy started producing PET bottles . In 2005, a second filling line for PET was installed and the high-bay warehouse was expanded by 3,600 storage spaces. In 2009 Gropper started producing not-from-concentrate juices (fruit juices). Shortly afterwards, the range was expanded to include desserts. According to a report by the Financial Times Deutschland , the company was able to more than double its sales from 2002 to 2011. The increase in so-called organic food is a particular focus.

In 2011 the dairy installed two more filling systems and began building a new high-bay warehouse.

At the end of 2012, the dairy started operating its own combined heat and power plant, which was intended to cover 65 percent of the total electricity requirement and to heat it. Since the thermal power station produces heat, cold and electricity, general energy savings and the associated reduction in CO 2 emissions are guaranteed. Since 2014 Gropper has been able to cover 95 percent of its energy needs itself.
