The first Netto store was opened in Copenhagen on April 1, 1981, as a reaction to the entry of the German discounter Aldi in Denmark. Netto entered the German and UK markets in 1990, and in 1995 Dansk Supermarked took over the Ed business from Carrefour. In 1995 the company expanded with Netto in Poland, and seven years later the first store opened in Sweden.

The trademark , a black Scottish Terrier , was designed by the Danish advertising specialist Peter Hiort (1940-2013).

Netto Germany

history

Netto Germany (also called Netto Stavenhagen or Netto Nord ) was founded in July 1990 as a subsidiary of Dansk Supermarked A / S. In 1992 a joint venture between Spar Germany and Dansk Supermarked A / S came about . Both companies each held 50% of OHG Netto Supermarket GmbH & Co. until 2005 , but operational management was with Dansk Supermarked A / S, which belongs to the globally operating AP Møller-Mærsk Group. After the main shareholder, the French trading group ITM Entreprises SA Paris, sold its shares in Spar Handels-AG to Edeka in 2005, Spar's stake in Netto was also up for grabs. Due to a right of first refusal of Dansk Supermarked A / S, the shares in the German-Danish discounter were redefined. Accordingly, Edeka had a purely financial stake with 25 percent and Dansk Supermarked with 75 percent in Netto. It was agreed, however, that the discounter would continue to buy goods together with Edeka and Spar in order to reduce costs and enable cost advantages through bulk purchases. On December 31, 2012, Edeka sold its stake in Netto Stavenhagen to the majority owner Dansk Supermarked. When Edeka left the OHG Netto supermarket GmbH & Co .; The business was initially continued by Netto Supermarket GmbH , which then outsourced the operational business to the newly founded Netto ApS & Co. KG , a limited partnership with a Danish GmbH (Anpartsselskab) as the personally liable partner , in September 2013 .

Corporate management and employees

The company's headquarters are in Stavenhagen , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The managing director is Torben Godskesen. The annual turnover in 2009 was 1.097 billion euros, the market share 1.6%. Netto is the sixth largest and thus the smallest German discounter. According to its own information, the company employs around 4,000 people and 200 trainees. The proportion of women is 72%. According to its own information, Netto has around 5,800 employees in 2019.

logistics

The central warehouse is located in Stavenhagen. From here, the branches in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin, Brandenburg , Lower Saxony , Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg are supplied with dry and chilled goods.

In May 2005 Netto opened a second logistics center in Wustermark , Brandenburg, with an approx. 20,000 m² high-bay warehouse and merchandise management system. This is intended to serve as the logistical basis for Netto's further expansion and is designed for 220 Netto stores in Berlin and Brandenburg. After an expansion of the logistics location in Wustermark, the markets have been supplied with both refrigerated and dry goods (goods that do not require refrigeration) since September 2007.

distribution

The first Netto branch in Germany (then still the German Democratic Republic ) was opened on September 14, 1990 in Anklam (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). Today there are markets in Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg.

In 2006 the discounter began its expansion in Schleswig-Holstein and opened its first branch there on April 3 in Elmshorn. In September 2008, a total of 272 stores were operated, nine of them in Schleswig-Holstein. Around 25 new stores were added each year over the next few years. The expansion in Saxony-Anhalt was halted until 2007, because this area was confronted with Netto Marken-Discount GmbH & Co. OHG. The takeover of some condo stores by Netto Marken-Discount in 2007 violated an existing agreement between the two companies. With the conversion of many Plus branches into Netto-Marken-Discount branches , this finally spread throughout Germany. In response to this, Netto pushed ahead with its expansion activities in Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. On May 22nd, 2008 the first store opened in Lower Saxony. Netto opened its 300th store in Germany on August 20, 2009 with its branch in Grömitz . On August 11, 2010, the first and so far only Netto store opened in Hamburg . The expansion activities will be scaled back significantly in the coming years. The company concentrates on improving the conditions in its existing stores or new buildings to replace existing branches.

Business model

In addition to groceries, a Netto market also has a typical discount range from the non-food sector (“ non-food ”). The food content is 95%. Due to the predominant distribution in East Germany, there are many East German and regional products in the range, for example most of the drinks in Dargun (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) are made by the Darguner Brewery located there (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Danish Harboes Bryggeri ) and in Calvörde (Saxony-Anhalt ) manufactured by Emig GmbH . The permanent range includes more than 900 products, including many own brands and imported goods from Denmark, but also numerous branded items. This is supplemented by campaigns on Monday and Thursday. In 2005, Saturday was introduced as the third day of action, but has since been abandoned.

Even before the amendment to the Packaging Ordinance in May 2006, the German-Danish discounter began installing bottle vending machines that were supposed to simplify the return process, shorten waiting times and relieve the staff. All branches have been equipped with vending machines since 2006. Netto also improved the orientation of customers by signposting its shelves and introduced the so-called price checker in its stores , where customers can inquire about the price of the goods by scanning the EAN barcode.

At the end of July 2006, the company held the Netto Market Days for the first time . Since June 2007 Netto has also occasionally offered the option of ordering articles via the Internet and then picking them up at the store. The discounter is thus adapting to its competitors, who have been offering this option for a long time. It has also been possible to purchase prepaid credit since June 2008.

A Netto market in Copenhagen

In the first week of January 2009, Kaufland published the result of a Greenpeace study on the sustainability of the fish range in German supermarkets and discounters in its advertising brochure, thus making the study known to a broader public. In this study, Netto came in last. Greenpeace sees an urgent need for action here. The questionnaires prepared by Greenpeace, as well as those by Lidl , Edeka and Tengelmann , had not been answered. In response to the poor performance, Netto has changed its strategy and is now also committed to sustainable fishing .

In 2018 Netto changed its corporate identity in Denmark and Poland. In addition to the new logo, the stores were renovated and redesigned according to an innovative store concept . The first stores in Germany are also being renovated according to this concept and given the new logo.

The first 5 stores were opened in November 2014, and 11 more stores had opened by mid-2016.
