The Plus Warenhandelsgesellschaft mbH existed from 1972 to 2010 as a subsidiary of Tengelmann . It was a food retail company based in Mülheim an der Ruhr . Since the takeover by Edeka, the stores have been run by its subsidiary Netto Marken-Discount .

numbers

According to its own information, Plus had 13 million customers a week in its approximately 2900 German branches with around 27,000 employees. Sales in 2006 were around 10 billion euros, of which 6.87 billion were in Germany.

Concept and organization

In terms of its business concept, the plus chain was regarded as a “soft” discount store within the food retail sector, positioned between the “hard” discounters such as Aldi and Norma and the full-range retailers such as Rewe or Edeka . The concept basically corresponded to that of a discounter (aggressive sales price policy, limited range, simple product presentation, etc.), but Plus differed in some points from hard discounters: The product range was larger and there was a higher proportion of branded items.

Since the beginning of 2005, Plus has been selling unsold non-food specials in so-called Billix stores, which, however, were all closed again in September / October 2007 and integrated into the Plus markets. The stores of the same name in the Netherlands do not belong to the Tengelmann Group.

Throughout Germany, Plus was divided into twelve regions. A sales region was led by a regional manager who was responsible for up to 270 branches. He passed this responsibility on to sales managers, who in turn were subordinate to district sales managers who were each responsible for around eight branches. The supply of goods to the German branches took place from eleven warehouses; in April 2009, as part of the changeover with Netto, the central warehouse in Ottendorf-Okrilla closed.

Plus advertised with the claim "Live well and save" derived from the letters of the company name . In formerly West Berlin, Plus Real was called, which means "Proper shopping, pleasant living". The other name in Berlin was probably due to competition. The name Real had nothing to do with today's consumer market of the same name.

Since December 2007 Plus, like many other discounters, has offered its own mobile phone tariff (“Pluskom”). In addition to branded products, Plus had a wide range of own-brand items, for example BioBio for organic products and “Viva Vital” for healthy eating. Both of these brands continued to be offered via Netto Marken-Discount .

In 2008, Plus was named the most animal-friendly discounter by PETA .

Plus abroad

In 2007 Plus sold its 250 Plus branches and 58 construction projects in Spain for around EUR 200 million to the French retailer Carrefour and the branches in Poland and Portugal to the Portuguese retail chain Jerónimo Martins .

In 2008 the Rewe Group acquired the Czech, Spar Austria the Hungarian and the Belgian Delhaize the Greek plus stores.

In 2010 the Bulgarian and Romanian Plus stores were sold to the discounter Lidl .

At the end of May 2010 Tengelmann sold its last and oldest plus foreign company, Zielpunkt in Austria , to the Luxembourg investment company bluO .

All foreign markets that have been sold are renamed into the buyers' own market presence.

The sale of all Plus foreign subsidiaries was completed in mid-2010.

Plus brand in Austria

In 2005 Tengelmann started a restructuring in Austria. 95 of the 361 Zielpunkt supermarkets became plus discount stores. Three years later these markets became Zielpunkt branches again.

Takeover by Edeka

On November 16, 2007, Tengelmann and Edeka announced that Netto Marken-Discount (Edeka) and Plus Deutschland are to be brought into a joint venture in which Edeka will hold 70% and Tengelmann 30%. On July 1, 2008, the Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover of the Plus branches with restrictions. The Tengelmann Group's share of the income in the joint venture was limited to 20%, and the share of assets and voting rights is only 15%. Because of the dominant position resulting from the merger, 378 branches, with a focus on eastern Germany, had to be sold. 328 of these have been sold to the Rewe Group and have now all been converted to the concept of the discount subsidiary Penny . An initially planned purchasing cooperation between Edeka and Tengelmann was prohibited in the course of the cartel proceedings. Thus, as announced, Tengelmann will look for another partner for its purchasing cooperation. The Federal Cartel Office then gave its approval on December 9, 2008 for the final takeover of the Plus branches.

By the end of July 2010, all of the Plus stores were successively transformed into Netto-Marken-Discount stores . Around 400 smaller, mainly inner-city branches are run as Netto Marken-Discount City , or Netto City for short .

Plus online shop

Plus has been running its own e-commerce platform since 2001, which the Tengelmann Group now continues to operate independently of the discounter branches.

In the Plus Online Shop it was possible to choose from a weekly changing product range, consisting of both branch items and special online offers. The selection comprised product groups such as household & kitchen, living & design, health & wellness, multimedia & technology, garden & balcony and car & two-wheeler. Areas such as travel or plants were offered by partners.

The Plus online shop was also discontinued on January 1, 2019. The page refers to the Netto Marken-Discount online shop.

criticism

At the beginning of April 2008, after the monitoring of employees in Lidl branches became known , the Stern reported in its online edition that in individual cases "Plus and Edeka reported in detail about the work performance and private life of the employees".
