First Delhaize store in Cologne (now sold to REWE Group)

The Delhaize Group ( French Groupe Delhaize ), formerly listed in the BEL20 , is an international food chain from Belgium that is active in seven countries. The company's headquarters are in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean near Brussels . The Groupe Delhaize should not be confused with the Belgian Louis Delhaize Group . Louis had separated from his brothers in 1875.

History and business

The group was founded in 1867 by Jules Delhaize and his brothers in Ransart near Charleroi in Belgium. The main focus of their economic activity is the operation of food supermarkets in North America ( United States ), Europe (Belgium, Greece , Czech Republic , Romania , Serbia and Luxembourg ) and Southeast Asia ( Indonesia ). The group is listed on the Euronext multi-country exchange , index BEL20 .

At the end of 2007 the group had a sales network of 2,545 stores and employed around 138,000 people. The predominant form of business is the supermarket , which accounts for 85% of the Delhaize Group's sales network. The remaining 15% is made up of smaller and specialized businesses. In addition to the sale of food, which accounts for around 95% of the Delhaize Group's sales, the group also acts as a wholesaler of food products for some of its stores as well as other products such as products for pets and farm animals or beauty and grooming products . The group includes Food Lion and Hannaford in the USA . The retail company Cora is part of the competing Louis Delhaize Group .

In Germany there were four Delhaize stores between 2003 and 2009. Two markets were located in Aachen (since 2003) and in Cologne ; In 2006 a branch opened in Cologne-Mitte and the last branch to date was opened on October 18, 2007 in Cologne-Braunsfeld. On January 19, 2009, Delhaize announced on request that the branches in Aachen and Cologne were to be sold. At first it was said that they were looking for a successor solution in which the basic concept and in particular the delicatessen department should continue to exist; However, on August 26, 2009, all four houses ceased operations and were taken over by the REWE Group .

In 2005 the Delhaize Group achieved sales of 18.6 billion euros and a profit of 364.9 million euros.

At the beginning of 2015, the Delhaize Group became a member of Coopernic , a purchasing association of European retail chains.

In June 2015 Delhaize and the Dutch food company Ahold announced their intention to merge. The merger agreement was signed on July 23, 2016 after approval by the shareholders and competition authorities. Ahold holds 61% of the shares in the parent company of the merged groups, Ahold Delhaize , based in the Netherlands.
