Jerónimo Martins SGPS, SA (JM), headquartered in Lisbon, is a Portuguese listed retail and consumer goods group, whose activities include food retailing and the production and distribution of consumer goods .

Company history

The name Jerónimo Martins has a long history in Portugal and began in 1792 with the opening of a grocery store on Rua Garrett, which is still an elegant shopping street in the heart of Lisbon. The house was well run until the founder's death, but later the heirs and sons of Jerónimo Martins' gambling debts. When the last descendant of João António Martins died, Francisco Manuel dos Santos took over the business in 1921. Starting from the headquarters in Lisbon's Chiado, a chain of retail stores developed under the name Jerónimo Martins & Filhos. In the mid-30s, the group invested in a margarine factory together with the Silva Torrado company. As early as 1926, Jerónimo Martins began a cooperation with the Dutch food company Unilever, which continues to this day . The company Lever was founded together with this group, specializing in the sale of cleaning agents and personal care products. Frozen products (Iglo) and ice cream (Olá) were added later. The death of Francisco Manuel dos Santos in 1953 led the heirs to Soares dos Santos to convert the company into a public limited company . During the Salazar dictatorship, Jerónimo Martins grew incessantly through nationalist industrial policy. Shops were also built in the colonies of that time. The decline of the colonies was a major turning point for Jerónimo Martins and resulted in heavy losses, especially in Angola .

In Portugal , the company survived the revolutionary years of 1974 unscathed and the company's leaders stayed in the country. Portuguese workers from Angola came back and they were given new jobs in Portugal. This enabled Jerónimo Martins to gain his strong market position and, given the Anglo-Dutch Unilever cooperation, business continued to do well. In 1980, the first supermarket opened in Portugal and it became the foundation of what is now the Pingo Doce branded supermarket empire . From now on there was an unstoppable expansion of the shops and the group even took over 15 supermarkets from Pão de Açúcar in Brazil, which were sold again after a while due to lack of profitability. During this time, the cooperation with the Dutch group Ahold, one of the real global players in the international grocery business, began. In addition to the establishment of countless supermarket chains (Feira Nova, Cash & Carry, Ino) and the acquisition of companies in the wholesale sector, there were now also joint ventures in other areas of the consumer economy (Hussel, Douglas AG etc.). Jerónimo Martins also expanded in the industrial sector and acquired a stake in the olive oil producer of the Galo brand. In wholesale, Jerónimo Martins took over the distribution of brands such as: Kellogg, Idal / Heinz, Rowntree / Perugina, Calvin Klein and Bahlsen.

At the same time, Portugal entered the common market of today's EU and so the share of foreign business increased steadily in the early 1990s. The group started investing in Poland in 1995 and has since become the market leader there with the Biedronka brand supermarkets . In 2012 the company decided to relocate its headquarters to Holland for tax reasons . In contrast to Portugal, a lower tax rate is due there. The supermarket group Pingo Doce made a name for itself especially in the crisis year 2012 by carrying out sales with discounts of up to 50% in promotions announced at short notice. Competitors described these practices as particularly aggressive and ruinous for the industry, and there were tumultuous scenes in the supermarkets.
