Since 2013, a food retail chain of the Portuguese retail and consumer goods group Jerónimo Martins has been presenting itself in Colombia under the name Tiendas Ara . The colored logo was inspired by the fact that Colombia is a “bird paradise” and can be identified with a macaw , the parrot native to Central and South America . The chain advertises with the slogan “Ara is color, diversity and joy. Ara is Colombia ”.

The first grocery store opened in March 2013 in the coffee growing region of Colombia in Pereira . In the meantime, by the end of 2018, there were a total of 532 stores and the more than 5,642 employees achieved a turnover of 599 million euros in 2018 .

The main focus on the Colombian market, however, is in the metropolitan region of Bogotá , which generates around 40 percent of the national GDP . The grocery stores have an average size of 300 and 600 m 2 and are mainly located in residential areas. The majority of the range and own brands are produced locally.
