Charles Dewachtere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Dewachtere ( Charles Paul Dewachtere; born December 22, 1927 in Ghent , † July 22, 2020 in Ghent) was a Belgian marathon runner and Olympic participant.

Life

1951 Dewachtere was Belgian national champion (over a distance of 35 km). In 1952 he defended his title in 2:23:08 h, possibly too short. This made him one of the fastest marathon runners of all time and one of the favorites for the Olympic Games in 1952 .

Due to an injury to his heel bone, he only came 18th at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 2:34:32 hours.

A prison sentence of 30 months for a discussion about change that got out of hand ended early Dewachtere's sporting career.
