Biedronka (German ladybird ) is a Polish grocery chain that belongs to the international Portuguese group of companies Jerónimo Martins . With 3,130 branches and over 70,500 employees, Biedronka was the largest supermarket chain and the second largest company in Poland in 2018 . The Polish drugstore chain Hebe also belongs to Jerónimo Martins.

The chain was founded in 1995 by Mariusz Świtalski and taken over by Jerónimo Martins in 1998; the number of 243 branches at the time has since grown to over 3,130.

In 2018, Biedronka had turned over 11.9 billion euros. Coface has classified Jeronimo Martins Polska in Central Eastern Europe as the fourth largest company in terms of sales. The managing director is Luís Araujo. 2015 68% of the range of were fast moving goods ( fast moving consumer goods , FMCG) in Biedronka assortment of Polish origin. Since early 2009, Biedronka has branded tuBiedronka also mobile telephony services of Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa on to prepaid phone rates.

criticism

In 2005, Biedronka was the ninth largest employer in Poland with 11,000 employees and was criticized for poor working conditions, as confirmed by labor inspections. Since then there has been a victims' organization, the Association of Victims Jerónimo Martins, SPJMD. She blamed the company - with medical confirmation - for the death of a female worker in 2003. Their pressure resulted in a 20 percent wage increase. There was particular public interest in a branch manager's fight to pay 2,600 overtime hours. Her story was published in the New York Times on February 25, 2005 . That is why the Solidarność trade union set up a separate department for the chain in May 2004. Since 2018, Biedronka has been paying saleswomen a starting salary of 2650 zloty gross, which increases to 2950 zloty gross within three years. The managers in the markets start with 3050 to 4000 zloty gross, depending on their experience and location.

The name “Biedronka” with the motto “Codziennie niskie ceny” ( daily low prices ) is the Polish word for ladybird , which is also stylized as the logo. Biedronka is one of the most famous brands in Poland.
