Kaufland's beginnings go back to the 1930s. At that time, Josef Schwarz (1903–1977) joined the tropical fruit wholesaler Lidl & Co. in Heilbronn as a personally liable partner ( general partner ) . The company was renamed Lidl & Schwarz KG and quickly expanded into a food wholesaler for the Heilbronn-Franken region . In December 1944, the company, as well as the entire city of Heilbronn, was completely destroyed during the Second World War. The rebuilding of Lidl & Schwarz KG succeeded within ten years, so that in 1954 the company again had its own domicile in Heilbronn and in the same year joined the "A&O chain" (today: Markant ). With the Handels- und Fruchthof Heilbronn GmbH , the first central warehouse was opened in Northern Württemberg in 1960. Eight years later, in 1968, Lidl & Schwarz opened the first hypermarket under the name “Handelshof” in Backnang, Swabia . For the first time, the goods were offered here in self-service over an area of 1,000 square meters based on the American principle. The market with then 70 employees was designed for the end consumer and no longer for wholesalers.

After Josef Schwarz died in 1977 at the age of 74, his son Dieter Schwarz took over the management of Lidl & Schwarz KG. In 1984 he opened the first hypermarket under the name Kaufland in Neckarsulm , where the corporate headquarters have been located since 1972.

After the reunification of Germany, Kaufland expanded into the new federal states. In 1990 the first Kaufland department store opened in East Germany with a tent sales. In order not to lose any time, the building will be built at a later date. At that time Kaufland had 51 branches nationwide. The company's system hit the core of the time in East Germany - the 100th Kaufland branch opened in 1993.

The first East German Kaufland department store was set up in Meißen in 1990 . In 1998 the first Kaufland branch abroad was opened in Kladno in the Czech Republic. Kaufland operates further branches in the Central and Eastern European countries of Poland , Croatia , Bulgaria , Slovakia , Romania and the Republic of Moldova . The expansion plans in Australia were abandoned.

Kaufland currently has over 1300 stores, 670 of which are in Germany.

Companies

structure

Kaufland is today, like the discounter Lidl, a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group. The Kaufland subsidiaries include Schwarz-Immobilienverwaltung GmbH & Co. KG , which owns the self-service department stores, and Kaufland-Service GmbH, which operates the self-service markets. In December 2009, Karl Lupus GmbH & Co. KG sold its previous twelve department stores belonging to famila Handels-Betriebe GmbH & Co. KG Rhein-Neckar and the Lupus Food Service cash & carry store with 1,400 employees to Kaufland; the actual takeover took place in February 2010. In January 2010, Kaufland took over four Schlecker ( Schleckerland ) hypermarkets in Ehingen, Geislingen an der Steige, Göppingen and Schwäbisch Gmünd, converted them and converted them to the Kaufland concept. At the end of March 2011, the previous Ratio stores in Osnabrück and Stadthagen will be taken over.

On June 15, 2020, Kaufland announced that it wanted to take over 101 locations from the Real retail chain and the real.de online marketplace. The takeovers result from the sale of the Real retail chain to a Russian investor.

Production companies / logistics

Kaufland operates seven logistics centers in Germany with a total of 2,700 employees:

On March 1, 2013, a new meat plant for 90 million euros was inaugurated in the industrial area on the A 38 near Heiligenstadt in Thuringia. Around 600 employees process meat into 250 articles, which are then delivered to the German Kaufland branches.

marketing

With TIP-Werbeverlag , which was based in the neighboring Heilbronn, Kaufland had its own advertising publishing company as a subsidiary, which published the brochures TOP aktuell and TIP der Woche . There, information was provided about current offers and products from regional providers. The free advertising leaflets were financed by advertisements and inserts. According to its own information, 400 different regional editions were published with a circulation of 17.8 million copies. On the evening of September 29, 2013, Kaufland's advertising was broadcast on German television for the first time as part of the newly launched television advertising campaign. At the end of 2016, TIP of the Week was renamed Kaufland . The printing has meanwhile been handed over to the APPL group of companies .

In addition to its advertising brochures, Kaufland publishes its free customer magazine, Das gute Leben, quarterly in cooperation with Stark Druck GmbH + Co. KG. Here primarily editorial content and recipes are published.

staff

Kaufland employs 132,000 people in eight countries. 74,000 of them work in Germany. In November 2010 the Kaufland Group introduced a minimum wage of 8.50 euros for its employees . Since March 1, 2011, this minimum wage has also been in effect for all employees of external service providers who work at Kaufland on the basis of a work contract or as part of a temporary employment contract. From March 1, 2012, the minimum wage was raised to 9.00 euros. In 2019, a further increase to 11.50 euros was communicated.

criticism

  • In the new edition of the standard work Black Book Brand Companies from September 2014, Kaufland was also listed for the first time. The authors accused the group of poor working conditions in the supply chain and among local employees.
  • In September 2014, Kaufland announced that the delivery of the TIP of the week by its own employees will be terminated and will be completely outsourced from November 1, 2014, as has already been the case for 40% of the circulation. According to the publisher, around 55,000 employees, mostly mini-jobbers , lost their jobs and had to reapply to external delivery service providers. The decision was criticized by the ver.di union.
