history

Until the church is planted

As part of the Hochstift Würzburg, Donnersdorf belonged to the Franconian Empire . It was secularized in 1803 in favor of Bavaria and fell to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in the Peace of Preßburg in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , with which it finally returned to Bavaria in 1814. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

The most famous son of the village was the sculptor Johann von Halbig , professor in Munich , among other things the creator of the Lindau harbor lion . His older brother Andreas, who u. a. worked in Würzburg , Munich and Vienna , was a well-known sculptor.

The place Donnersdorf at the foot of the Zabelstein , the northwest corner pillar of the Steigerwald, and halfway between Gerolzhofen and Haßfurt, controlled, reinforced with walls and gates, as an early medieval royal court and later high court in the Old Kingdom , controlled the entire traffic volume on the Würzburg-Bamberg route ( via Volkach, Gerolzhofen and Haßfurt).

The place Damphesdorf (Damphahesdorf) was mentioned for the first time in a document of the Fulda monastery from 779.

Old High German damph = steam, haze, smoke; aha = water, flood, river; Village = farm, estate, settlement: Donnersdorf = settlement on the hazy water

Donnersdorf has been the seat of its own parish and a high court (13th Würzburgische Landcent) of the Duchy of Würzburg in the Zabelstein district since 1000 . A city wall with three city gates, two of which were inhabited, surrounded the place.
