history
Until the 20th century
The history of Wonfurt begins in the more recent Hallstatt period at the latest , as the burial mounds in the Dickerschlag forest area testify. Since an important river crossing there probably already existed in Celtic times, the ford, whose epithet could refer to both the Celtic won = meadow swamp and the Old High German wunnja = pastureland , has long been a bone of contention.
According to tradition, the castle in Wonfurt was originally a court of law. After the settlement of the Main area by the Franks , a central office (centurie) was founded there under Charlemagne , a headquarters for the court and administration of the surrounding settlements.
According to tradition, Wonfurt is said to have got its name from the first owner of this court, a woman Unfordi, whose husband had died in a campaign against the Thuringians and who owned the farm from 810 to 850. Since she had no descendants, she handed over her property to Count Albert von Babenberg, Burgrave of Theres , on the condition that the farm could only be handed over to a spiritual brotherhood if the Count or his descendants sold the farm.
The place was first mentioned as Uniforti in a Fulda deed in 905 . Count Adalberd, one of the Babenberg brothers, gave some places in the Volkfeld , including Uuunfurten (Wonfurt) with all rights , in exchange to “St. Boniface”, ie the Fulda monastery . The exchange contract was approved by King Ludwig the Child (900–911) in 904 in the royal court of Forchheim .
In the 10th century Wonfurt became the property of the Hersfeld Abbey . On February 5, 1015, it was exchanged by Emperor Heinrich II , who furnished the diocese of Bamberg, founded in 1007, with it.
The Manor (Schloss Wonfurt), based in Wonfurt since 1569 Barons of Seckendorf was the 1806 Grand Duchy of Würzburg of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany mediated and fell with this 1814 Bavaria. It has been privately owned by the von Bismarck families since 1978.

There is an arcade building in the inner courtyard . The former moated castle is used for chamber music concerts and literary events and can also be rented.
- St. Andrew's Church
- Construction of the church began in 1817 according to the plans of the royal building inspector Bernhard Morell . The Pantheon in Rome served as a model . If you approach the town center, coming from Haßfurt, it dominates the townscape. The statues of St. Benedict and St. Catherine are on the large flight of stairs in front of the church . These figures come from the Benedictine Abbey Church of Obertheres, which was demolished in the course of the secularization and whose hewn stones and blocks were used to build the St. Andrew's Church.

- from 1755 contains tombstones of the Lords von Fuchs from the 16./17. Century and a Rococo crucifixion group around 1750.
