description

The flowing stream

The iron spring is located at the foothills of the northern Steigerwald north-east of Wonfurt on the left bank of the Main at 216  m above sea level. NN . It is a swelling funnel raised by limestone tufa deposits . The mineral content of the spring, which pours on average around 15 l / s , is brought in by deep waters that can rise from the Middle Muschelkalk at a fault . The rising stream is led into a basin for treading water and flows into the Main after about 250 m. Red iron hydroxide is deposited in the bed of the flowing stream .

The iron source is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as a particularly valuable geotope (geotope number: 674Q001).
