About this picture
Michelau from the north

Michelau im Steigerwald (officially Michelau i.Steigerwald ) is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt and a member of the Gerolzhofen administrative community .

The place in the Steigerwald is characterized by the landscape with its vast forests, meadows and vineyards .

geography

Neighboring communities

The city of Gerolzhofen is in the immediate vicinity . Neighboring communities are Donnersdorf and Dingolshausen . There is also a short shared border with the municipality of Rauhenebrach . Several community-free forest areas border the municipality : Bürgerwald , Hundelshausen , Nonnenkloster , Vollburg and Wustvieler Forst .

The next larger cities are Bamberg (~ 50 km), Würzburg (~ 50 km) and Schweinfurt (~ 25 km).

Community structure

Michelau is divided into eleven districts (former municipalities with their districts, the population in brackets as of 1987):

The former holiday village Sudrach (113) was only raised to a district after the regional reform (1987 at the latest).

history

The striking mountain cone of the Vollburg rises two kilometers to the east. Remains of stone walls suggest a vorgermanisch e height fortress out as "Volcburg" the springing near river Volkach and the folk field gave their names.

Incorporations

Before the territorial reform, Michelau belonged to the Gerolzhofen district . On July 1, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Prüßberg was incorporated. Altmannsdorf and Hundelshausen were added on May 1, 1978. In 1972 the Gerolzhofen district was dissolved and the Michelau community became part of the Schweinfurt district.

Village analysis

In 2003, Michelau was the test subject of a so-called village analysis commissioned by the Diocese of Würzburg . For one week the way of life and conditions of the inhabitants of a small village as well as their wishes and prospects were researched. Based on these findings, the basis for the restructuring of the country pastoral should be developed.
