history

Euerbach, once Urbach, later called Ewerbach or Ewersbach, was mentioned in writing for the first time in 777. But even before that there had been settlements in the area around Euerbach, which is proven by finds of ribbon ceramics from the Neolithic Age (around 3500 BC).

In the middle of the 16th century the population joined the Protestant denomination entirely. The 40 m high tower of today's Evangelical Church of St. Cosmas and Damian (see drawing from 1974 - below under web links) and the crypt from the same century are evidence of the early faith . The choir of the church was built during the 14th century, the sacristy in 1531. Even the bells (1478, 1524 and mid-16th century), the pulpit (1546) and the font (1574) are stately old.

The former town hall (1537), the Weihersbrunnenlinde (1569), which fell victim to a fire, and the Lower Castle (1592) also date from around the same time. Euerbach owed the town hall and the pond fountain to its ruler and owner Heinrich von Bibra . The castle was built by one of the lords of Steinau . It later became the property of the Lords of Münster , hence the names Upper Castle (Bibra Castle) and Lower Castle (Steinausches or Münster Castle).

In the Thirty Years' War Euerbach was almost totally destroyed, then rebuilt in the same place.

In 1711 the existing church (today a Protestant church) was declared a simultaneous church , ie services for both denominations were held there. This repeatedly led to an argument. It was not until 1740 that the Lords of Münster finally settled it, not until 1740, when they had a Catholic castle church built, the plans of which come from Balthasar Neumann . Its tower is 29 meters high, the bells are from 1793. Two years after the construction of the Catholic church, a nave was added to the existing church.

The pavilion of the Upper Castle, which served as the summer house of the Lords of Bibra and is also said to have been built by Balthasar Neumann, dates from the same time.

Euerbach has owned a Jewish cemetery for the Jewish community since mid-1672 . Funerals were held there until 1940. The cemetery is about one kilometer outside (west) of Euerbach and contains over 1170 graves.

Today Euerbach with the incorporated villages of Obbach and Sömmersdorf has over 3100 inhabitants and, according to the first written mention, is around 1230 years old. It has three churches, the newest of which was completed in 1970. The Protestant church was renovated from 1970 to 1974, as was the old town hall. In addition, the pavilion, the upper castle and one of the old mills have been preserved. However, the Upper Mill, the Lower Castle and the Weihersbrunnenlinde no longer exist. The Obere Mühle was demolished by its owner in 1968 and a modern house was built in its place. The lower castle also had to be demolished in 1968 because it was in disrepair. The linden tree was felled in 1972 because it was completely burned out.

However, the Euerbach people have retained their nickname. They received it when Lorenz Ludwig von Münster, lord of Euerbach Castle, captured a Turkish standard during the siege of Vienna in 1683 . It was first exhibited in the castle and then sold to the War Museum in Munich, where it can still be viewed today. Therefore, the Euerbach people are still called the Turks by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages .
