Inscription above the entrance to the crypt

The church is located at the highest point of the old town and is surrounded by a garden. The lower parts of the nave wall may still be of Romanesque origin. The almost 27 m high tower dates from the early Gothic period. The type belongs to the 13th century. The choir was added in the first half of the 14th century. During the renovation in 1972, a frescoed band of eight apostle crosses was uncovered. The Gothic ceiling painting is no longer recognizable. In 1531 a sacristy was added to the south of the choir . The nave was rebuilt on a larger scale in 1742. The walls of the previous Romanesque building were probably included and raised. There is a crypt-like basement room under the choir room. It is accessed through a staircase from an anteroom that is located under the sacristy. The access to the crypt below the sacristy bears an inscription with the year which is interpreted as 1251.

Furnishing

The altar is a simple structure with two columns that are entwined with vine leaves. The altarpiece from 1688 shows a Calvary scene . The predella represents the last supper .

The pulpit is made of sandstone and is marked 1546. The polygonal body rests on an egg-stick capital. The painting dates from 1718. A crucifixion scene is shown in the center. Above it the coat of arms of those von Steinau called Steinrück. On the left and right there are depictions of the four evangelists with their symbols : above left Matthew with a winged person, below Luke with a bull, above right Mark with a lion and below John with an eagle. All four evangelists are shown with an open book and a quote from the Bible . In detail these are Mt 24, 13; Lk 2, 14; Mk 5, 36; Joh 1, 36. On the two outermost surfaces of the pulpit, the two reformers, Martin Luther on the left and Philipp Melanchton on the right, are shown with their dates of birth and death.

The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist is depicted on the wooden lid of the baptismal font . The figures and the dove representing the Holy Spirit date from 1718. The wooden cover was renewed during the renovation in 1973 and modeled on the historical model. The base of the baptismal font is marked 1574.

The sacrament house dates from 1437. There are no more references to the former patronage of Saints Kosmas and Damian in the church furnishings.

Epitaphs

There are four epitaphs in the church interior . The wooden epitaph of the couple Hans von Steinau, called Steinrück , died 1587, and Anna von Steinau, born Truchsessin von Henneberg , died 1576, is hung on the south wall of the nave . The painting depicts the resurrection of Jesus Christ . Hans von Steinau's family kneels below.

The epitaph of Ursula von Steinau nee on the wall near the baptismal font . von Rosenberg , second wife of Wolff von Steinau called Steinrück, died 1547. A double ancestral test shows the four paternal ancestors of Rosenberg , von Wolmarshausen (Vollmarshausen, shield not quite correct), von Seinsheim-Schwarzenberg and von on the left side of the epitaph Adelsheim, on the right side the ancestors on the mother's side von Hutten, Speth von Zwiefalten, von Rechberg and Speth von Zwiefalten.

In the basement of the tower there is an epitaph with a relief of a life-size figure in knight armor on the southern side. It represents Wolff von Steinau called Steinrück , died in 1564. The spear that the figure originally held in the right hand has been lost. A double sample of nobility lists the four paternal ancestors Steinau called Steinrück, Bibra , Rotenhan and Voit von Rieneck on the left side of the epithaph , on the right side the ancestors on the maternal side of Miltz (wrongly marked), Bibra , Truchseß von Wetzhausen and Schwanfeld.

Opposite is the tombstone of Appollonia von Steinau geb. von Münster , died 1531. On the capitals of the pilasters is the coat of arms of the mother Dorothea von Giech or for the maternal grandfather, according to Biedermann Onuphrius von Giech, according to other sources Bernhard von Giech, on the right side that of the father Engelhard Jr. Münster zu Niederwerrn or the paternal grandfather Andreas von Münster can be seen. At the lower end there are three coats of arms, from left to right, Marschalk von Ebneth (the maternal grandmother was according to Biedermann Apollonia von Rotenhan, according to other sources Petronella v. Marschalk), von Steinau called Steinrück for the husband and Lichtenstein for the grandmother on my father's side, Dorothea von Lichtenstein.

Three more epitaphs are placed in the crypt, which were in the church until the renovation in 1972. An epitaph shows a relief of Christoph von Steinau , son of Wolff von Steinau in knight armor, died in 1574. Next to it is the gravestone for Ursula von Steinau, née. Truchsessin von Wetzhausen , Wolff von Steinau's third wife, died 1584. Opposite is the epitaph for Margaretha von Steinau, nee. von Selbitz , wife of Hans von Steinau, son of Wolff von Steinau from the marriage with Ursula von Rosenberg.

On the southern outer wall of the nave is the tombstone of Juliane von Steinau geb. Sable from Giebelstadt , died 1675.

Fortified church

The churchyard is surrounded by gaden. On the north side, sections of the churchyard are delimited by a wall instead of a gaden. The fortified church is entered through a gatehouse. The largest street is the former tithe house of the village lords. It bears the coat of arms of Wolff von Steinau with the year 1560. Since 1960 it has served as a Protestant parish hall. In the northern part of the fortified church there is an earth stable .
