About this picture

Niederwerrn is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt and borders on the Hainig district of the city of Schweinfurt . Niederwerrn is the second largest municipality in the district (after Werneck ) in terms of inhabitants . The main town Niederwerrn is now a typical residential suburb with large new housing estates and a relatively small town center.

geography

Niederwerrn is a north-western suburb of Schweinfurt in the Main-Rhön region . The place is on the eponymous, but differently spelled Wern . One of the longest and most important streets in Schweinfurt, Niederwerrner Straße, leads to the town.

Geology and natural geographic classification

The community is located in the northwest of the Schweinfurt Basin natural area , a topographically relatively low-lying unit with little relief within the Main Franconian plates . There the upper reaches of the Wern has sunk into the rock of the Middle and Lower Keuper since the Pliocene . Loess was blown in during the Ice Ages , with which fertile soils developed in the Holocene . These have been used intensively for centuries and shape the regional landscape.

According to the BfN's cultural landscape structure , the populated areas of the community still belong to the remote agglomeration area 309 Schweinfurt , and the arable land is part of the 13600 Schweinfurt Basin cultural landscape .

Community structure

Niederwerrn has been made up of the two districts of Niederwerrn and Oberwerrn since May 1, 1978 . The incorporation of Oberwerrn took place in the course of the municipal territorial reform in Bavaria . In addition, Niederwerrn includes the northern part of the former Conn Barracks barracks of the US Army Garrison Schweinfurt, which was dissolved in 2014 .

Niederwerrn is a parish village , Oberwerrn is registered as a church village in the place database.

Until the 19th century

Niederwerrn has been known since the Middle Ages for the Wiesenburg Castle , which is only a ruin. With her, Niederwerrn was first mentioned on June 17, 1137.

While Oberwerrn remained under the rule of the Duchy of Würzburg , Niederwerrn came under the rule of the von Münster family in the 15th century. Baron Eyrich von Münster initiated the Reformation in the village in 1565 or 1566 .

In 1806 the imperial knighthood was dissolved; Niederwerrn came to the Kingdom of Bavaria , but initially only for one year. In 1807, there was incorporated into the newly formed Grand Duchy of Würzburg , with which it fell back to Bavaria in 1814.

Jewish community

At least since the middle of the 18th century there were Jewish families living in the village who formed a Jewish community , set up a school and built a synagogue at Schweinfurter Straße 23 . This church and school were devastated by SA men during the November pogrom in 1938 . After the war, the buildings were acquired by the community and since then the former Jewish school has been used as a town hall and the former synagogue as a library. Memorial plaques on the two buildings remind of this event.

Incorporations

During the regional reform in Bavaria , the Free State had already decided to incorporate Niederwerrn and other suburbs into Schweinfurt. Afterwards, on the instructions of the Niederwerrner native, State Secretary Erwin Lauerbach , the decision was completely reversed.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent neighboring community of Oberwerrn was incorporated.

coat of arms

The description of the coat of arms, adopted in 1961, reads: In blue, a silver diagonal wave bar, covered with two facing wings, alternately divided by red and silver.

The wings are taken from the coat of arms of the Lords of Münster , an old Franconian noble family that ruled the area from 1436 until the end of the Old Kingdom in 1803. The wave bar stands for the river Wern, which flows through the municipality and whose name in the older spelling "Werrn" is also part of the place name.
