Conn Barracks

Location of the Conn Barracks in Bavaria

The Conn Barracks were the largest barracks of the US Army Garrison Schweinfurt . It has not been used for military purposes since 2014.

The barracks was originally from 1937 to 1945 an air base of the Air Force ( Army ) called airfield Schweinfurt , even airbase Schweinfurt . From 1945 to 1947 it was subordinate to the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and the Military Post Wiesbaden as Schweinfurt Air Base . From 1947 to 1951 she was part of the United States Constabulary (6th Regiment and 28th Squadron). In 1948 the barracks was officially handed over to the US Army and was henceforth called Conn Barracks . Since then, numerous troops have been stationed in the barracks, which until 2014 was part of the US Army Garrison Schweinfurt (USAG Schweinfurt).

The area does not have a new name to this day, is an inter-municipal area and belongs to the communities of Geldersheim and Niederwerrn in the district of Schweinfurt and, in a small area, to the independent city of Schweinfurt. As a follow-up use, a large business park is to be created, for which the special purpose association Intercommunal Business Park Conn Barracks was founded.

geography

location

The Conn Barracks are located 4 km (as the crow flies) northwest of Schweinfurt city center in the municipality of Geldersheim and Niederwerrn , at 240 m above sea level, in an arc of the Wern . The barracks is located on the Schweinfurt – Erfurt railway line , with a direct rail connection and is crossed on the northern edge by the four-lane, non-intersection-free B 303 , which is regulated by traffic lights . The two barracks areas, the small (motor pool) north and the main property south of the B 303, are connected by an internal pedestrian walkway. The motorway junction No. 30 Schweinfurt-West of the A 71 Erfurt –Schweinfurt can be reached via the B 303, 1 km away . From here it is 5 km to the A 70 and a further 6 km to the A 7 .

Approaches: The main entrance Main Gate on Conn-Straße and the entrance to the motor pool branch off at an intersection with the B 303. Another driveway Euerbacher Gate , on the eastern edge of the Conn Barracks, is at the end of the 1 km long connecting road, Euerbacher Straße, which leads through the Werngrund to the former American housing estate Askren Manor , now Bellevue . In the west there was still the Geldersheim Gate .

The border between Niederwerrn and Geldersheim runs inside the barracks along the historic Euerbacher Straße, which is identical to today's Conn-Straße in the west.

size

The barracks are 201 hectares in size, which corresponds to the area of downtown Munich . The total area is broken down as follows:

  • Geldersheim: 167 ha; - including airfield
  • Niederwerrn: 33 ha; - including 3 hectares north of the B 303 (motor pool)
  • Schweinfurt: 1 ha.

Surname

The airfield barracks were named Conn Barracks on December 22, 1947 , in honor of Lieutenant Orville B. Conn, Jr., who was the first member of the Sixth Cavalry Group to die on the Normandy landing in 1944 .

history

2-1 Aviation Battalion from the Conn Barracks in Bosnia-Herzegovina 1997

The air base was built from March 1936 to September 1937 on the western city limits. The facility was initially used by Aviation School 7 as a training ground for dive combat aircraft (Stuka) of the Junkers Ju 87 type . Many cadets were killed in daring aerial maneuvers. The airfield was used by bombers from 1941 to 1945 . It was temporarily submerged to camouflage it , but it was heavily bombed by the Allies along with the adjacent railway line. The area finally resembled a lunar landscape. Passenger trains from the direction of Erfurt and Bad Kissingen could often no longer go to the main station, but had to end at Oberwerrn station.

On April 11, 1945, the 42nd Division of the 7th US Army marched into Schweinfurt and immediately occupied the air base. After the Air Force (USAFE) withdrew in 1947, the area of the actual airfield was only used as a helipad for the 4th Brigade, an Army Aviation Brigade ( military helicopter ). Also as a launch site for anti-aircraft missiles ( Hawk FlaRak position ). The missile position was dissolved at the end of the Cold War in 1992.

On the large, northern open area of the airfield, away from the runway that still exists today (2018), the Americans gradually expanded the barracks, in the end to about twice the size of the Nazi era . From 1958 to 1996 the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division , from 1996 to 2008 the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division and many other units were stationed in Conn  . In 1991 the 3rd Squadron of the 4th Cavalry was moved from the Schweinfurt Ledward Barracks to Conn. From then on, the USAG Schweinfurt combat troops were concentrated in Conn, while the areas closer to the city center were almost exclusively used for administration, supply and leisure. At Conn's siding, the Schweinfurt Terminal Station (SFT) of the 5th Signal Command, a. Tanks for the Iraq War (2003) loaded, which is why the Conn Barracks moved into the focus of the American media at the time.

In 2014 the US Army completely dissolved the Schweinfurt garrison. As a result, the Conn Barracks were on 15./16. December 2014 handed over to the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA) (see: Schweinfurt # US conversion ).

Stock 2014

When the Americans withdrew in 2014, the Conn Barracks had a total of 280 buildings. At that time, the area consisted of: residential buildings, administration buildings, troop accommodation, storage and maintenance halls, a church, an event hall, a shopping center, a siding for rail loading, a sports center, sports facilities and supply and disposal facilities. As well as an airfield with: 675 m long, paved runway, helicopter landing pad, hangar , tower and fire station. In addition, a launch site for mobile anti-aircraft missiles, with various buildings and a taxiway system.

Anchor center

In a smaller area of the Conn-Barracks, immediately south of the main access road, in the municipality of Geldersheim, the government of Lower Franconia is operating a community  accommodation (GU) for refugees until May 2019.

A smaller anchor center for asylum seekers , for 1,400 people instead of the originally planned 2,600 people, will move in May and June 2019 from the Schweinfurt Ledward Barracks to the Conn Barracks in the Niederwerrner municipality, immediately northeast of the previous communal accommodation. The shared accommodation in the Conn Barracks and the anchor center in the Ledward Barracks will then be closed. The anchor center will be one of the seven Bavarian anchor centers and should be closed again by the end of 2025 at the latest. The new anchor center is located within the diamond that forms the railway line in the northeast, the B 303 in the north, the access and access road to the Conn Barracks in the southwest and the outer ring road within the barracks in the south. The Central Immigration Office (ZAB) and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) will not move from Ledward to Conn until 2020.

The state government's plan should not stand in the way of the city and district of Schweinfurt's plans to establish a business park there with the neighboring communities. There is also the assurance that with the establishment of the anchor center, access to the rest of the site and the site itself will be released as a prerequisite for the development of the area. Which enables land acquisition by participating municipalities and land-use planning .

New business park

Main property

On the main property of the Conn Barracks, in addition to the smaller area of the temporary anchor center , a large, intermunicipal business park is intended as a subsequent use . For this purpose, the special purpose association of inter-communal industrial park Conn Barracks was founded, with four members: the municipalities of Niederwerrn and Geldersheim, the city of Schweinfurt and the district of Schweinfurt.

A feasibility study (2017) under the aspects of noise emissions , nature conservation and infrastructure showed that 100 hectares can be used commercially. A new development concept would be necessary. In the northwest area one would be the industrial area and in the central area, a industrial area conceivable. After completion of the contaminated site investigation , a land use and development plan is to be drawn up.

Motor pool

The 3 hectare motor pool is a spatially separated area of the Conn Barracks (see: location ). There are two two-story halls on top of which the upper floors can also be accessed via ramps (Buildings 7 & 8). The municipality of Niederwerrn acquired the small area in 2017 from the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks. The motor pool remains part of the association area of the Zweckverband in order to ensure the desired, uniform overall development of the over 200 hectare conversion area. A commercial tenant has bought part of the motor pool.
