The airfield Schweinfurt-South is a special airfield south of the Lower Franconian town of Schweinfurt . He is supported by the Aeroclub Schweinfurt e. V. operated.

geography

The airfield is located four kilometers south of the historic center of Schweinfurt in the area of ​​the municipality of Gochsheim on the Hetzberg parcel at an altitude of 208 to 211  m above sea level. history

Shortly after the Allies lifted the flight ban , the Aeroclub Schweinfurt e. V. founded. Initially, the flight took place at Gelderheim airfield, on the Mainwiesen near Schonungen and various other airfields in the area. In the 1960s, today's airfield was developed and expanded. An aircraft hangar with a clubhouse, a flight control tower and another aircraft and equipment hangar were built.

Airfield and equipment

The airfield is a special airfield for all types of aircraft up to 2000 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW), helicopters up to 5700 kg and has no regular operating hours. Landing is only possible after prior registration ( PPR ). The place carries the ICAO identification EDFS.

There is a commercial and workshop building with a tower (frequency 119.980 MHz), a hangar and the managed clubhouse as well as a refueling facility. There is a winch launch facility and a tow plane is also available.

Incidents

  • On July 28, 2001, a Schempp-Hirth Janus -B type glider crashed while approaching in a neighboring forest area. The pilot was fatally injured and the aircraft was badly damaged.
  • On May 11, 2003, a Schempp-Hirth Ventus motor glider had a false start, seriously injuring the pilot and destroying the aircraft.
