The airfield Bamberg-Breitenau (ICAO EDQA) is the Sonderlandeplatz the Upper Franconian city of Bamberg . It was operated by the US Army from 1945 to 2012 under the name "Bamberg US Airfield" (ICAO code: ETEJ) , but was already used mainly for civil air traffic at that time. Today the airfield is approved for sport and business jets up to 10 t maximum take-off mass ( MTOW ), a refueling system is available. The operators are Stadtwerke Bamberg in cooperation with the Aero-Club Bamberg eV, which is responsible for handling flight operations.

Location and transport links

The airfield is located between the Haßbergen, the Thuringian Forest and the Fichtelgebirge at the gateway to Franconian Switzerland, approx. 3 km northeast of Bamberg city center in the immediate vicinity of the Bamberg motorway junction (south of the A 70 Schweinfurt - Bayreuth and west of the A73 Coburg - Nuremberg) , near the Berliner Ring ( B 22 ) on Zeppelinstrasse in 96052 Bamberg. It is located at an altitude of 811 ft / 248 m above MSL and at the confluence of GAFOR areas 54/56/57; the frequency is 120.180 MHz. Visitors will find free parking spaces for cars and bicycles. The airport is connected to the city bus network and the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area (VGN). Line 914 runs every hour from the Bruckertshof stop to Bamberg city center. Alternatively, line 931 from P + R Kronacher Straße can also be used. This runs every 10 to 15 minutes, the walk there is about 10 minutes. All information and timetable information for Sundays and public holidays can be found on the Bamberg public utility website.

history

  • In 1890, a parade ground for the 5th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regime was set up on the site of today's airfield .
  • In 1912, the first two powered aircraft, the "Grade Monoplane" and the "Sachsen Doppeldecker", could be seen in Bamberg. The first hangar for the newly established Royal Bavarian Air Force was built, and a war pilot school was set up in 1916.
  • In 1917 the parade ground was converted into a military airfield. In the final stages of the First World War, there was a military aviation school with 90 aircraft for a total of 100 flight students with a staff of 323 employees on the Breitenau.
  • After the end of the First World War in 1918, the airfield was used in parallel for civil aviation and as a military training area.
  • In 1920 all military buildings (hangars, accommodations) were demolished.
  • In 1925 a glider hangar was built, which was used as such until 2014.
  • From 1926 the Upper Franconian Airline used the airfield, but it was soon dissolved due to bankruptcy.
  • Now aviation dominated in Bamberg, which from 1933 increasingly served as pre-military training. During the Second World War, the Bamberg-Breitenau airfield served as an external landing pad for air force aircraft, especially for the defense of Nuremberg.
  • In 1945, US Army aviation units occupied the site, and private aviation was prohibited in Germany
  • In 1951 the US authorities approved a civil parallel operation for sport and business flights by the Aero Club Bamberg.
  • In 1958 the first major flight day thrilled the population from town and country.
  • Bamberg-Breitenau airfield has been the base of the Bavarian air rescue team since 1969.
  • The first classic car meeting took place in 1989, which was followed by eight more by 2009.
  • In 1998 the originally 635 m long runway was extended to 1190 m. Factory air traffic with jet planes has started.
  • In 2011 the city council passed a resolution for the permanent preservation of the Bamberg-Breitenau special airfield.
  • On June 28, 2012, the military use of the airfield by the US Army was given up and returned to the Federal Republic of Germany. After around 100 years of military use with the ICAO identification ETEJ, the Bamberg-Breitenau airfield is only used civilly and was temporarily given the ICAO identification EDEJ.
  • In 2013, two aircraft bombs from World War II were successfully defused. The construction work to renew the asphalt runway, which was lengthened to 1253 m and widened to 23.5 m, and the installation of an underfloor lighting system were completed. A high voltage line was laid underground to enable the extension of the landing taxiway (LDA). This was followed by the reopening as a civilian special airfield under the new ICAO code EDQA. The landing directions of the asphalt runway have been corrected due to the change in the earth's magnetic field from 04 to 03 and from 22 to 21.
  • In 2014–2016 all old club buildings were demolished. The club and operations building, the tower and the aircraft hangar were rebuilt. The city spent a total of 4.6 million euros on the modernization of the airport in the course of the establishment of the Brose company.
  • In 2015 the city of Bamberg acquired the Breitenau special airfield from the BImA. The economic operator was Stadtwerke Bamberg, Verkehrs- und Park-GmbH, flight operations are still handled by Aero-Club Bamberg e. V.
  • In 2017, Bamberg-Breitenau airfield was approved for aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 10 t.
  • In 2018/2019, the towed glider track was rotated so that it runs almost parallel to the asphalt runway. The landing directions in glider flight remain 04 and 22.
  • In 2019 the airfield was completely fenced in as part of the instrument flight procedure. Instead of the planned IFR procedure for helicopters only, one is now to be introduced for fixed-wing aircraft after a change in EU directives makes this possible.

Airfield facilities

The operational buildings at the airfield are divided into

  • the tower from which information is provided to nearby aircraft upon request,
  • the club and operations building of the Aero-Club Bamberg e.V., in which flight preparation, lessons, administration and meetings take place,
  • the aircraft hangar, in which the 11 glider pilots, 2 motor gliders, 5 motor pilots and the gyroplane can be found, which are stationed at Bamberg airfield,
  • two workshops, one for motor and one for gliding,
  • the trailer hangar for the trailers in which the gliders can be transported, and
  • the tank system at which AVGAS, JET A-1 and MOGAS are available.

Further information, in particular about the operating times and PPR, can be found on the Aero Club Bamberg website

The restaurant "Zum Fliecher" is also located at the airfield.

use

At the airfield, primarily civil take-offs and landings of sport and business aircraft take place . The airfield is mainly used by two different interest groups: On the one hand by the Aero-Club Bamberg eV for motor, motor glider, ultralight and glider flights, on the other hand by Brose and the BHS Helikopterservice , the individual and flexible VIP helicopter -Charter flights offers (in cooperation with DC Aviation Stuttgart).

The sharp drop in the number of take-offs in 2013 is due to the renovation work on the runway, which resulted in a landing ban.

Expansion planning

Since a further extension of the runway is hardly possible due to local conditions, there were considerations to build a new airfield between the two cities together with Coburg, as Coburg was also planning a new, larger airfield. One possible location would have been near Rattelsdorf. However, these plans have since been dropped.

On September 4, 2017, the Bavarian State Government published a press release in which it informed that the special airfield Bamberg-Breitenau should be upgraded according to new aviation regulations for the instrument flight traffic of airplanes and helicopters in order to permanently secure the works air traffic with business jets in Upper Franconia. The implementation of the resolution will take place from 2019 to spring 2021. Among other things, the lighting of the runway and the apron will be expanded, approach aids and weather systems installed and an emergency power supply set up.

environment

For reasons of noise protection, the minimum altitude of 3,000 ft MSL applies over the city. The location of the traffic areas was also chosen so that the neighboring residents are disturbed as little as possible by flight operations.

The planning for the designation of a nature reserve on the special landing site is underway after the city of Bamberg and BUND Naturschutz have agreed on this.
