The Hammelburg camp airfield , also known as the "Hohe Lanz" airfield or Hammelburg airfield , is a special airfield in the area of the Hammelburg camp in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen .

history

As early as 1911, a military aviation school was set up on the Hammelburg military training area, which was opened by the Bavarian Army in 1885 , the second in the Kingdom of Bavaria after the one in Munich - Oberwiesenfeld . From 1963, the area of ​​today's special landing site, which was already released for civil use in 1954, was used by glider pilots from Fliegergruppe Noell from Würzburg , who had previously flown to the Saalewiesen between Hammelburg and Pfaffenhausen . With the gradual expansion of private powered flight, the Flugsportgruppe Hammelburg (FSGH) eV was founded in 1968, which has since been at home on the "Hohen Lanz" and has steadily improved the infrastructure of the place. A tower and a second hangar were built between 1970 and 1972. In 1992, the runway was asphalted for safety and noise protection reasons to enable the powered aircraft to take off more quickly. Soon after, a separate power supply line was laid and a new gas station with storage space for two types of fuel was built. A highlight was the self- dismantled round hall in Neubiberg and rebuilt on the Hohen Lanz with space for eight aircraft. The clubhouse offers overnight accommodation, sanitary facilities and a classroom, outdoor seating and a children's playground. A bakery was built in 2012 and a fresh water pipe was laid in 2012/13.

Todays use

The Flugsportgruppe Hammelburg owns two powered aircraft, one powered glider, one microlight and four gliders and offers sightseeing flights on one of the two or four-seater powered aircraft as well as guest flights in a glider. A little below the airfield is a model airfield, where the model aircraft division of the association founded in 1973 is at home.
