The airfield Elsenthal-Grafenau is the Sonderlandeplatz the Lower Bavarian town of Grafenau . He is from the Flugsportverein Grafenau e. V. operated.

geography

The airfield is located in the southern Bavarian Forest , about four kilometers southwest of the historic city center of Grafenau. The Große Ohe flows to the west and the Kleine Ohe to the east , which merge to the Ilz to the south of the site . The state border with Austria runs 30 kilometers south near Passau and the border with the Czech Republic 30 kilometers east .

history

Aviation had been in operation in Grafenau since 1963, when the Häring freight forwarding company operated the site. The flight operations were later taken over by the Grafenau aviation club on what is now the site as an external landing area . After some expansion, the course was approved in 2003. The flying area is also used by the model flying club all year round.

Airfield and equipment

The airfield is approved for aircraft up to 2000 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW), helicopters up to 2,700 kg.

There is an aircraft hangar, a tower (frequency 118.935 MHz) and a clubhouse. A towing or winch launch for gliders is not possible.

Incidents

  • On August 22, 2011, a high- wing Reims F152 collided with an embankment during an unsuccessful attempt to land. The nose wheel was damaged and took off again. During the subsequent emergency landing on EDMV Vilshofen, the nose landing gear buckled completely and the machine slid 40 m "on its stomach" before it came to a standstill, severely damaged.
  • On May 5, 2016, shortly after take-off , the pilot steered a Socata 893 towards an inhabited area, where it crashed right next to his own residential property. The pilot was fatally injured.

traffic

Local roads connect the airfield to the north to the federal highway 533 and to the eastbound federal highway 85 . The public transport does not serve the airport directly. The closest boarding options are in Grafenau, four kilometers to the north, to the Waldbahn , as well as sporadically to bus routes in Eberhardsreuth and Schönberg .
