The Airfield Straubing-Wallmühle is an airfield near the Lower Bavarian independent town Straubing . It is operated by Flugplatz Straubing-Wallmühle GmbH .

geography

The airfield is located about five kilometers northwest of the historic town center of Straubing in the area of the Atting municipality in the Straubing-Bogen district . The airfield is located in an abandoned gravel construction area to the right of the Danube at river kilometer 2332 at an altitude of 319  m above sea level. NN .

In terms of its natural surroundings, it is in the Gäuboden , to the north the terrain rises to the Bavarian Forest , south to the Danube-Isar hill country .

history

As early as the 1960s, the area of today's airfield was used for gliding . At this time, flight enthusiasts from Straubing were looking for a way to glide. Some meadow plots near Atting were merged and with the help of pioneers of the Bundeswehr a grass runway with a length of 600 meters was created. A former newspaper kiosk was purchased and converted into a tower . Soon after, an aircraft hangar , a gas station and a restaurant were built. In 1972 the Straubing-Wallmühle airfield was officially opened and has been continuously expanded since then. First, the newspaper kiosk was replaced by a real tower and the grass runway was extended and an asphalt pavement was added. This was followed by a runway lighting and other hangars. In 1999 the runway was lengthened and widened one more time so that it reached its current size. A GPS landing system was also set up.

Airfield and equipment

The airfield is approved for aircraft of all types, maximum take-off weight (MTOW) according to PCN-40 according to instrument flight rules and open from 7:00 (winter 8:00) to 17:00 (winter until sunset). During the remaining times, landing is only possible after prior notification ( PPR ). Customs clearance is possible on workdays after prior notification on site. (PPR +90 minutes) The course carries the ICAO code EDMS.

An instrument approach procedure based on satellite navigation (GPS) is also available, as is lighting of the taxiway for visual approach at night .

There are several farm buildings , a tower (frequency 127.150 MHz), nine hangars, a restaurant and there has been a petrol station ( AvGas , Jet A1 ) with an oil service since 1978 .

Use and economy

The airfield is mainly used by private pilots and business travelers, and the air sports club and the Straubing Aviation Club also use the airfield for gliding and powered flight. Every year around 50,000 passengers are handled with around 21,000 flight movements. The share of business travel is more than 50%. Around 80 aircraft are stationed in nine parking halls.

Thanks to the extensive range on offer, the Straubing-Wallmühle airfield facility has achieved an important position for the region. At the moment, almost 200 people are employed at the airport, and the number is rising.

The city of Straubing and the district of Straubing-Bogen founded Flugplatz Wallmühle GmbH to operate the airfield, with current share capital of just over one million euros.

Incidents

The plane caught fire and burned out completely, killing the pilot.
  • On March 30, 2007, a Piper PA-34 Seneca landed for training purposes with the right engine switched off . The four inmates from Austria were able to swim to the shore. Two of them were seriously injured, two were slightly injured in the accident and the aircraft was badly damaged. Furthermore, land and environmental damage occurred.
  • On August 28, 2008, the pilot of a twin- engine Raytheon RA 390 business jet lost control of the aircraft on landing and only came to a standstill 70 m away from the runway, slightly damaged.
  • On September 9, 2017, a small Cirrus SR22 aircraft had an accident , which got off the runway on landing and then sank in a nearby pond . The pilot was able to swim to the bank, the aircraft was badly damaged and land and environmental damage occurred.
