In 1956, a landing field with a grass runway 450 meters long was opened and used and expanded by the Haßfurt motor flight club in the following decades. In 1968 the airfield had a runway for aircraft with dimensions of 550 meters long and 50 meters wide. In 1977, the runway was extended to 1,100 meters and the entire length of the runway was paved with a width of 20 meters. In 1992, the Haßfurt airfield was taken over into public ownership and expanded between October 1994 and June 1997 for 2.9 million euros.

The airfield has been approved for instrument flight operations ( RMZ) since September 19, 2013 . Among other things, a game protection fence had to be erected around the site, the runway widened by 3 meters and shortened by 57 meters in order not to have to relocate a road. The entire measures cost 918,000 euros. In 2013 there were around 15,000 flight movements (take-offs and landings). In 2012 there were 15,264 aircraft movements and in 2011 17,766.

The airfield is approved for aircraft of all types up to 5700 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW) according to instrument flight rules and open from 8:00 (winter 9:00) to 18:00 (winter until sunset). During the remaining times, landing is only possible after prior notification ( PPR ). Customs clearance is possible on workdays after prior notification on site.
